In the market for a VW caddy, looking to spend about 3-5k on the Van, mainly looking at pre 2008 models with the 1.9 engine. Struggling to find nice models in Ireland for my budget and was wondering if it still pays to bring in commercial vehicles from the UK, not familiar with the whole process and any opinion on the matter would be appreciated.

Importing into the south from the north is different compared with importing from the rest of Britain. From the north, if the Caddy was living there before Brexit, you just pay a flat fee of €200 VRT, as far as I know. So you pay no customs. On the other hand, if you're bringing it in from the mainland Britain, which you probably are because of the amount of choice over there, it's more complicated. You pay customs, VRT, and it's quite complex to figure out how much you pay. I looked into it briefly earlier this year and was put off. The VRT people were a pain to deal with. Their position was: "we can't tell you how much you'll pay, you just need to bring it to us and you'll find out there and then".

Edit: you need to figure out the VAT situation too, as far as I know. When you bring it into the south, you have to prove that VAT has already been paid on it. I'm not sure of the details of all of this, but it's something you have to take care of too.
