Universal air filters

    I need to sort out an airfilter for my tractor, fordson super major with 590e engine, but I can't get the original air filter for it because its a ford Dorset cargo engine.

    Do air filters restrict airflow if too small, or is it just the prefilters that do that. Can I get a universal car filter, or truck filter like the cone shaped ones?

    I got a dust bowl prefilter for it a couple months back but it sounded like it was restricting airflow to the engine, so I took it off.
