asking on behalf of my dad, in case anyone has come across a similar issue; several times recently, when sitting at lights and when the engine has cut out - it fails to start again when he decides to move off. he needs to (i think) pull the key out and do a full 'cold' start.

it's a 2018 model, and he was saying that for now, he'd just leave the system disabled - but it resets itself every time you get out of the car.

anyone ever come across the issue, and does anyone know how to disable the auto stop more permanently as a short term measure?

You cant disable it permanently but you can trick the car into it not working. Turning the heater dial to windscreen defrost on the Hyundais disables stop / start.

If its the newer model with a button then press it and leave it pressed. It should stay on even after the car is turned off.

As for his actual problem Id say its the clutch or brake pedal sensor. More than likely the clutch one. Its stopping but to restart it you take your foot off teh clutch and its not being detected that the clutch is released.. From memory there was a modified switch available. But a trick if you are any way handy is to loop two of the wires on teh switch so that the switch is redundant but you wont have stop/start at all if you do this. Cant remember which 2 you loop as its a while since I did one.

If the steering wheel is given a tug left or right then the engine should restart (will prove the "start" is operational), on my 2019 Polo, pressing the brake pedal will only restart the engine if pressure is kept on the pedal, or its pumped a few times, presumably some connection with the brake servo pressure decaying.

Also pressing the stop/start button (to disable the stop/start) should restart the engine.

Switching the ignition off/on should allow the car to be restarted normally without having to remove the key.

I only use the stop/start selectively, after starting the car I just press the disable button just before putting the car in gear, I then enable it, as required.

Just looked up an old notebook I had here. It should be a 2 wire switch.

Take off the block connector and loop the wires and you`ll be good to go.

Just remember that this will also bypass the press clutch to start the car.

OK - slight miscommunication. Turns out it can take a couple of minutes for the car to restart, so that would increase the chances of it being a clutch pedal sensor I assume?

As far as he can remember there's no warning on the dash stating 'depress clutch to start car' like there is on mine, which would be handy to confirm it.

No, the car should start instantly once the clutch is depressed, before the advent of stop/start a lot of cars required the clutch to be depressesd before starting and had no warning but proba bly had no display screen then either.
