Question about a car that is off the road for 3 years

    Hello All,

Can you please tell me what is the sequence for a car that is off the road for the past three years? It needs a new NCT and to be taxed but I am thinking of selling it on.

Which comes first - the NCT or the tax?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Regards,

You can't drive it on the road until it has an NCT so there's no point in taxing it beforehand. Is it declared off the road?

    Hello Newmember,

No it hasn't been declared off the road. The tax and NCT have both ran out 3 years ago.

How does one get the car to the NCT centre for the test ? Can you get an NCT test done without the car being taxed?

I am just wondering what the sequence is.

    Regards,

When you go to tax it you will be charged the arrears for the time it was untaxed. You can get around this by transferring the ownership to a family member or friend who is willing to assist you.

This will wipe the arrears. They can immediately declare it off the road as they are the ‘new owner’. This is completely legal BTW.

A car that is declared off the road can be driven to and from an NCT appointment legally.

What’s the car? Before you go to all that hassle you’ll have to decide if it is worth putting back on the road.

Certainly don't tax it, as long as you can show you're on the way to the NCT appointment you'll be fine, lack of a current NCT is hardly an issue given the current delays, just make sure your happy it's still roadworthy, as this is still your legal responsibility regardless of whether it has an NCT or not.

Your biggest issue will be insurance, as a lot of insurers won't transfer insurance to an un-NCT'd car, they check this so that's your first port of call.

Are you sure that's true? It doesn't even make sense if it is.

Yep and you can drive it to and from a garage for repairs as a result of a failed NCT too.

Also OP, assuming it hasn't been driving in 3 years either? Depending on what the car is, it might need a fair bit of TLC before it's driveable.

You'll need to see does it start, could be stake fuel, check general fluid levels, check the brakes, see if the tyres are ok (most likely old too and may have flat spots)

Spend the bare minimum on it. Get it tested first. It could be rotten, depending on how old it is

and where is has been stood for the last 3 years.

4 new tyres and brake fluid and new oil and filter at a minimum. Bloody good wash inside and out too. Strong chance it will need a new battery too. New wipers. All the cost start to add up pretty quickly.
