Does anyone know how much would it cost to cut down the height of palm trees (about 20) and to take away 5 dead trees

Got a quote of over 2200 euros for 2 days from a tree care company

    Is that a reasonable price?

Presumably you are referring to Leylandii? That sounds about right for 25 trees - they will have to take away the stuff that is cut off the tops of the trees too? Assuming they are a properly kitted out and insured firm. And the accessibility and surroundings of the trees makes a difference too.

When the tops are cut off the trees it will be more obvious that they are extremely wide at the base, and it will not be possible to cut them back as you will be cutting back to dead wood that will not re-grow. You might want to bear this in mind when you get it done.

What height are they? If they're high enough to need a tree care company that sounds like a bargain.

Fairly high about 12 to 15 ft as each tree has different height

Badly need to do it and to give us more light

The base and the sides won't be cut

Well known company, fully kitted and insured

Will be going ahead at that price

    Thanks guys

The most sensible option would be to cut them down altogether as they are the dirtiest hedge you could have and you will end up paying another few thousand in a few years time to cut them again.

    100%

If at all possible, get rid of them altogether. They're an ugly mess to try to make a hedge of, and nothing else can grow anywhere near them. They suck the light out of the air. Awful things.

We had a line of 24 of them along the boundary of our newly purchased home a few years ago... bigger than yours at 45+ feet, but we bit the bullet and removed them completely... mini digger to dig the stumps out. Best thing we ever did. Replaced it with a fine beech hedge.

So yes, I'm biased! But I agree with Iodine1... topping them is a false economy.

I would agree with the others to take them out, they are not a satisfactory hedge.
