They're scanning the obd ports now, and your car threw up some errors. You having any ABS issues?

Am I right saying that they won't fail on OBD codes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,121 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

From my reading no. It can fail on it.

"Then, from early 2022, when an error code is detected, this may constitute a reason for “failure”. "

I heard of someone who had a glove mistakingly covering the OBD port and got a fail as NCT said they couldn't find it.

Currently you cannot fail an NCT for having fault codes or for covering your OBD port.

    It’s just advisories for now

Just offered an NCT slot for a centre 200km away from me! Not one I ever used before either. I thought it very odd.

Mine is behind a screwed-on cover (by design). They appear to be unable to find it; all certs since they started checking it have had the advisory.

Is this to check for DPF removal?

Worrying to say the least. A low battery, for example, can trigger all manner of gruesome looking fault codes that look awful but mean next to nothing.

It's just a discussion. Something more important is bound to come along.

No it's just for things like ABS/ Airbag codes.

No not having any issues that i know off or lights coming on did have the tyre pressure light seems to have stopped, Nct Guy told me today its started scanning obd ports, he did not mention advisory to me when i got cert , presume it will come in to force eventually, People be trying to erase the error odes before they go for NCT

I would imagine that there might be available some sort of dummy OBD port that can be installed in place of the real socket, or a dongle, that can be plugged into and it will regurgitate the "right information" to the NCT scanner to allow the vehicle to pass, even if there are faults or modifications.

Every problem has a solution. And such hack devices like this might be available from the back arse of Amazon, Aliexpress, or eBay

Anyhow, this is all an absolute scam, orchestrated between the NCT, the DoT and the motor industry. The end objective is to get older cars off the road for any sort of trivial OBD technicality, so that the motor industry can make more sales with the government taking a wedge of cash in VRT.

This is just the latest thing to show that the NCT is a complete and utter money spinner.

Fairly certain it was only brought in due to EU regulations. Same with the ‘Dangerous’ defects brought in a couple of years ago.

I had exactly this with a Renault Kadjar last month - pass/advisory with a note along the lines of OBD port obscured.

On the Kadjar it's behind a trim piece on the dash between the glove box and passenger door - they obviously were either unaware of where it was or unwilling to remove the panel in case of damage etc.

As I understand it, the VIN and mileage will be read and correlated to the chassis/odometer itself. I presume this'll also allow DPF removals to be detected, so brace yourselves...

I hope this chinese or eastern european auto electronics wizzards can invent a OBD dongle that filters the information that is passed on to the OBD scanner.

Give out whatever right information, and block any fault codes.

This whole scanning thing will be a disaster. We will have cars failing left right and centre over stupid stuff that is nothing more than a meaningless code.

The codes aren't meaningless, the code tells you what's wrong with the car. The NCT has removed the death traps that used to be on our roads, next they want to get rid of all the polluting vehicle which have had their antipollution defeated.

I think it actually adds even more value to the NCT as you get a fairly comprehensive check for a IMO good price. Hopefully will eradicate the DPF delete crew spewing sh!te even under moderate acceleration.

In the USA this had been a thing for years. They connect to odb port so you can now but fake odb ports that say everything is ok.

On nct they often don't bother even try check as it's quicker.

Every state in the US has its own checks, some have zero actual roadworthiness and just do emissions - its quite a mess.

In Ireland in 1980 we had a population of 3.4 million and road deaths of 560

In 2022 we have a population of 5.1 million, way more cars on the roads, and fatalities of 140

When I was a kid in the 80s there were cars driving around with the doors held on with tape and exhaust fumes leaking into the cabin (from leaded petrol)
