    Hi folks:

I'm trying to get to the bottom of excessive oil use in a Ford Focus 2009, 1.8 Engine.

    Possibly wrong dipstick.

Current dipstick is 21" or 53.5 cm in length. (that's the entire length including the round yellow plastic handle).

I cant get a definitive on google, does anyone know what the correct length should be?

    Thanks

    Does it matter?

As long as the dipstick reaches the oil you make a note of where it is, drive x,000 km, dip it again and note the difference. Then you note how much oil it takes to reach the original mark.

Ignore this i just found your other thread

  • Hi folks.

Just giving you the end update.

Car checked again today. Nothing found but engine burning oil, emissions off the scale. (Passed NCT in Feb 2023).

Rings probably gone. Ford/Mazda 1.8s are known for it. With this being a 09 I'm assuming tax is dear too so you're probably as well get rid of it especially while it has some test.

Did any mechanic check the PCV valve (I think these have them) if it's blocked the crankcase pressure will cause oil burning. Be a handy enough fix if this was the cause.

  • @selectamatic. Thanks for that. I'll double check that. (PCV valve).
