Need Help! Furniture layout in small living room

My daughter is decorating a house prior to moving in later this summer. The living room is fairly small (5.2m x 3.5m) which is 11.5 ft x 17ft.

We are governed by a number of things, specifically the window, fireplace, door and radiator which is making our decisions on furniture choice and purchase very challenging.

I'm hoping people with an eye for this kind of thing can advise us.

I've drawn a map of the room with the location of window, door, fireplace, radiator to demonstrate the situation. Any helpful comments or suggestions would be very welcome.

You best bet is a corner sofa, the long section opposite the window (but not too close to the fire) and the short section in front of the radiator.

When you see one your daughter likes take the measurements, then go home and lay newspaper on the floor using the same measurements to see if it fits. You can get them custom made but it will push the cost up. Corner sofas are quite large so make sure it will fit in doors, halls etc too.

A coffee table and rug in front of the sofa and then obviously the TV in the corner you labelled as TV Arial.

Will the room be a bit unbalanced? All seating one end, TV & window at the other?

I don't think it would be imbalanced - the focus of the room will always be the window/TV/fireplace, so you're just putting it on a diagonal axis - everything you need to see is easy from the seating.

But I would absolutely caution as the poster above said about checking what will actually fit in the door - I'm assuming since it's a small enough room, that it's a small house with a small hallway - and that door into the room is very close to the front of the house. You will probably have to bring whatever it is in standing up, so you're limited by the height of the doorway into the living room, or into the house, whichever is the lower.

Your only other option is to have the door hitting a chair/sofa in front of the window and anyone sitting on it to develop neck strain.

Why would they develop neck strain? They are other uses for rooms like this other than watching TV.

Obviously a big L in the corner and a TV opposite a good TV layout, but limited in other functions. The Fireplace and the TV are the more fixed items usually figuring out them helps finalise the layout.

Maybe the TV mounted above the fireplace might help furniture choice/options?

I think you need to figure out if the fire is decorative, or if it will be lit to heat the room/house. That plus the existing mantle height will dictate how high the TV could be, too high is uncomfortable. Once the TV is either on the corner or the wall, you can figure out if the room is all about the TV - in which case go for the best cinematic layout, or if it s mixed us, in which case you can have an arm chair that is no good for watching TV, but better for talking to people on the sofa, reading, having a nap etc

Fire is a proper solid fuel fireplace. Heats the room only but main source of heat is OFCH
