Just wanted to know your opinion's on this, gearbox on my Zafira was replaced also clutch ,second hand gearbox (supplied by them apparently they ordered from Traynors) new clutch, bill €1135.

A week later noticed oil on driveway ,look like it was coming from gearbox sump, so took it back they had car for the day, end of day rang them they said couldn't see any leak so they cleaned it up and said drive over week end and see how it is.

i collected it and drove for about a hour then stopped to check again sure enough leaking again but this time look around wheel and looked like it was leaking from driveshaft at gearbox running down onto gearbox sump. so took it back this time they agreed it is leaking.

Rang them to day to see if it was ready, said sump leaking and driveshaft leaking badly worn ,don't knw what he meant by that, he didnt ay but it souded to me as if i was going to get a bill explaining to me how much work when in to it.

Anyway i feel i shouldn't be billed again, i know it is a second hand gearbox but if seals were check and why not replace driveshaft seal anyway as it was taken out ,also bill said replaced gearbox oil so would have thought sump seal would have been replaced with new one.

Now im collecting tomorrow so will see then about bill situation, now if it were you would you be expecting a bill?

I’d imagine you agreed to having second hand parts fitted, therefore you should have been aware of the problems that can arise with second hand parts.

If you wanted a warranty or guarantee then you should have bought new parts. I’m sure your still making a saving over buying new.

Gearbox is not faulty but we are talking about a leaking one , a good machinic should be able to replace a gearbox new or second hand with out it leaking , they took sump off to replace with fresh oil as bill states, so new seal should be put on, but a week later leaking from sump, would have thought as a precaution replace driveshaft seals to at time as these have to come off to replace gearbox with seal which would only cost €10. (just checked looks like Traynors give 3 month's guarantee with used gearbox).

Is it auto or manual? The manual zafiras don't have a sump for the gearbox just a drain plug?

It's not uncommon for second hand gearboxes to leak from the driveshaft seals, in an ideal world they should be replaced every time but they can be tricky to get a hold of depending on the gearbox variation.

Traynors will have no interest in a leaky driveshaft seal, they warranty is only in case the whole box is junk.

If it was me I think you pay for parts (new driveshaft seals and oil) and free labour is reasonably fair

It's a manual, it does have a small sump at bottom of gearbox, which he said was also leaking, which I think was taken off to drain it last time , on the bill was oil for gearbox, agreed seal should be replaced anyway, wouldn't mind paying for parts only, wouldn't be a big bill, but with labour , collecting car today, will put my point across to them if it's another big bill.

Well wasn't charged after, young lad came out to reception handed me the keys , I said thanks and ended out quick to car, waiting for " hold on a minute".
