Buying The Beer And Adopting The Glass!

Kind of wondering if I’m a terrible person with this one! I’m building up a glass collection so I can hopefully match tge beer to tge appropriate glass. Usually if I’m ordering direct from a brewery I’ll add one or two if they’d glassware items to my cart as well. At times though if I’m out and about and a beer I wouldn’t usually have comes my way with a branded glass, I might sometimes bring it home especially if I plan on buying more of that beer in my next order. I would be less inclined to walk the glass from a regular pub offering craft as a side alternative. I think it’s not fair on that guy but from a craft brewery owned bar or a very large macro bar doing a big turnover with some craft additions I wouldn’t be too worried. Lol so I’m wondering am I some sort of deviant who hasn’t gotten it off my student days grace id mind? 😀

I remember cycling home from a pub in Limerick with a Hoegaarden glass in each of my jacket pockets. 😂 Must be over a decade ago now. And I think a friend of mine pilfered a Kwak glass and wooden stand because he knew I liked the look of it.

Haven't done anything like that in a long time. The Christmas boxes of Chimay, Erdinger, etc are great for building up a guilt-free collection. The manager of my local offie gave me a few nice Delirium glasses as well for being a loyal customer. My absolute favourite is an 8 Degrees tulip glass that I got in a restaurant Skerries years ago. They used to it serve up a bottle of Trouble Brewing IPA (even though I ordered the porter) and the manager kindly let me keep it after we paid for our meal.

Good point about the Christmas box sets. I might use those this year to build up a Belgian collection. Usually I’d only liberate the very odd glass if it was interesting. I don’t mind adding in €4-€6 in a beer order for a branded glass as well. I do see some places take the pi$$ with that too. Worst I’ve seen is tge Tom Creane lads. €14 for a branded glass! WTF??? Western Herd do the same type of glass for €6. Only difference seems to be the logo.

Myself and another barman from Mickeys went back to a house party years ago and opened a press to get a glass and found 6 Hoegaarden glasses in there. The host host tried to claim they were from another Pub but we were the only ones in Limerick doing it at the time! We ended up taking them all back!

Long time ago, when Belgo was in Dublin and had a terrific beer range, to get a Pawal Kwak (glass and stand) , you had to surrender your shoe. Good times

God yes! Good times indeed! I’d forgotten that! I remember a few of us in a pub in Belgium once being cut off until they got their glasses back!

Great system! I vaguely remember being in bars that had a deposit for glasses like that, but never shoes! :D

I think the Nancy Blake's beer festivals might have sourced some of my collection as well, now that I think of it.

I never rob any glasses unless they fit in the dishwasher and don't take up much space.

This is a thread for people who are fastidious about glasses.

after 2nd year in college, we were cleaning the house to get our deposit back and felt obliged to return all the pint glasses to the Stables in UL.

Imagine our surprise when they didn't really appreciate us returning nearly 100 glasses to them - shouldn't have taken them in the first place they said.

we had washed and dried each of them, stacked them individually in boxes and carried them about 2km to bring them back, full sure they'd give us a free pint to finish off the year.

I never rob glasses, I just ask the barman in the pub where I'm drinking, and what usually happens is they say yes, but say not to take the one you are currently drinking from because they'll give you a clean one.

They get them branded glasses free from the breweries usually, or if they are unbranded ones they've bought themselves they might be a bit more hesitant - it's part of owning and operating a pub, you need to account for loss/breakage and replacement of glassware, and they'd much rather you ask than try to be sly about it.

Most decent off-licences have a supply of branded and unbranded glasses in the back stores. I've often asked "you don't happen to have a pint glass / glass for [insert beer], by any chance?" and been given one or two.

They'll usually be only too happy to hand over a couple.

Haven't stolen one in years, and yes, it is definitely stealing. Last few I got were a 5 lamps one with loads of Dublin slang on the glass, a Kaiser one that was completely ceramic and a set of three mini glasses on a wooden paddle that were being used to promote some sort of Smithwicks three ale taster they had going on. (like the one at the bottom of this page https://www.smithwicksexperience.com/our-ales).

https://www.adverts.ie/ceramics/kaiser-german-beer-mug/25930725 Some scamp is selling one of the Kaiser ones on Adverts.

Not a pint glass but I obtained a pair of Havana tumbler glasses a few years back in a pub I was DJing in. They were and still are the most durable and used glasses in my house to this day. I managed to get a few more from the barman a few weeks later.

I do have a nice collection of pint glasses but as I was doing a lot of work in pubs/clubs as a DJ it was easy enough to ask and get them for free.

I actually tried to get some when I moved house 2 years ago and most of the off-licences had nothing at the time. Probably a big drop-off in promotions during that stage of the pandemic. Eventually got 2 big Heineken glasses in O'Brien's. I should have just kept the IKEA ones I left in my old place!

Used to liberate a lot of glasses when I was a student but now a days I usually reserve that for macro beers. The microbreweries have to pay for glasses and they're getting it tight enough as is.

Lidl have a range of different beer glasses in the middle aisle this week as well if anyone needs to stock up.

These days I tend to buy from breweries as another way of supporting them (and for insta obviously!). Picked up some of the lidl glasses last time they had them - decent quality actually (good weight/ feel to them) - and has become my favourite unbranded one.

Yeah I usually add some merch to a beer order from one of our craft breweries. I figure that might have a bigger margin on merch and it’s mice to have a branded glass or two.

I remember in the late 90s I took a trip to the Lake District in England. I was living in London at the time and my local had Hooegarden on tap.

Went into a local Cumbrian bar and sure they had Hooegarden on tap too. Ordered one and a wine for my gf. We sat there and a member of the bar staff sat at the table close to us, watching us. As soon as, and I mean as soon as I'd sipped the last sip and placed the branded glass on the table, the bar girl swooped and took the glass away. They were worried I was going to take it!

A couple of times recently I've said to the barman I'm collecting glasses from craft brewers and can I give them a fiver for a glass. I felt like a dickhead but they surprisingly said yes. Maybe they're just happy I didn't just try to steal it instead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,774 ✭✭✭adaminho

I'll gladly put the fiver in my pocket anytime you're in Limerick!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,554 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

A fiver for a used glass? are you mad?

Was in Rascals recently for my birthday and the OH bought me a brand new glass for a fiver, it's a nice glass, but a fiver is still a bit much.

A brewery won't be making much off a fiver a glass. For comparison, IKEA charge €2.50 for an unbranded glass.

yeah, I've been looking at buying some glasses with branding on them recently. Not many places in Ireland selling them for one thing, and the UK suppliers are reticent to send to this island because of Brexit or something.

I've seen upwards of 3 pounds per glass with a logo, before VAT and shipping - for orders of about 100 units
