New Job and No Work

    Hi,

I have recently started a new job (in my 4th week now) and I've no actual work and I feel very underutilized. Is this normal (I was in my previous role for a fair bit of time so haven't started a new job in a while)?

So far it's primarily just been asking to get to know things but with very little direction on what I need to know, other than to talk to certain people.

I'm used to being busy and was in a place where I was mentoring new hires, so find this experience quite frustrating.

Is this a more advanced knowledge-worker sort of role? If so, that's not unheard of; it takes time to get new hires up to speed with everything to the point they can actually contribute, and some companies are slower or more disorganised about it than others. Best thing to do would be to talk to your manager about the situation and see if there's anything else you should be doing or if they can set you up some tasks to start helping with.

Ya, I'm in an IT role and with a good 10 years experience so I'd assume that means advanced knowledge sort of role.

Just find it frustrating and a bit uncomfortable having no work to do, and I've gone from a place where I was always busy (too busy at times) so it's quite alien to me
