Hi all,

We have a cobblelock driveway that's gotten absolutely covered in weeds. I'd rather avoid weedkiller but I think it's our only option at this stage unless powerwashing would work? And am I right in thinking I have to resand or regrout after powerwashing? And maybe reseal?
Finally, we'd like to reclaim some of the driveway to grow plants. Am I better off trying to lift the pavers or would there be sand etc and I should just put containers on top of them without taking them up?

For the weeds, a kettle of boiling water is as effective, and much more environmentally friendly, than weedkiller.

I actually tried the boiling water last week and it didn't make a whole lot of difference unfortunately. Some of the grass type weeds died back, but the roots are still so strong that pulling them out just breaks them with the root intact.

I use salt and it works well. If you have kids it's a great job to give them. Buy a good few cheap containers of table salt and let them off!
Apparently spraying with a mix of vinegar and water works well too (high concentration of vinegar)

Your cobble block drive should have 100mm of sand and a similar amount of hard-core under it.
So lifting the blocks alone will not help you for planting flowers.
We have a cobble block drive and stupidly many years ago I power washed it.
Thus removing all the sand between the blocks.
Que more weeds.
I really power washed it and used kiln dried sand to refil the gaps.
Still some weeds but not as much.
I bought a motorised brush which I now used to remove the weeds.
