John Mc Grath. From Waterford is a good U Tuber. IMO.

That's funny - I only came across him for the first time yesterday as it popped up in my feed after you posted this. 🤔

But yeah, he was doing a episode on solar installs. He's a good presenter.

Could be a gap in the market for one, I might start one. Could do with a discount on building materials atm 😵🙈

Maybe there is a gap in the market, but it's a very small market targeting only Ireland. Realistically we have very similar materials as UK based folks so other than a familiar accent, im not really sure what advantage watching an Irish person over a UK person is.

Also, its a lot of work making videos, with no guarantee on a return on investment.

john mcgrath is the only one i know of thats irish. sadly he hasnt much time lately to make videos.

a good one i found a while back is 'mr a builders' . a small team that does extentions in the uk. very good videos and indpeth but not too anal on the details.

You'd really want to be on your game if you're putting content out like many of those content creators do, the comments section on many of those videos is a feeding frenzy. It's the old addage of 'opinions and arseholes'.

I assume he's referencing the saying "Opinions are like arseholes. Everyone has one". And as we know all too well, some people have an abrasive way of offering their opinions online.

I mean that any of these guys such as John McGrath or Mr A Builders are putting their necks out as even the slightest mistake will be picked up and criticised in the comments. It's not an easy gig. Commenters can be very abrasive and I'd say that has an effect on content producers over time.

And as for opinions and arseholes - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Opinions_are_like_arseholes

sorry wasnt really sure which way you were saying that.

i agree. some horrible people out there posting all sorts of crap about the creaters.

i generally watch these videos fairy early after release so miss most of the crap. there are people out ther that know nothing about the subject but you would swear they had a degree in it.

i do think it has effected a lot of channels . it has to be hard to put all that work into a video and project and see people nit picking and bad mouthing it or focusing on one tiny part and nothing about the rest of it

Not Irish, but if you want to watch somebody with a challenge on their hands and not a huge amount of experience (or safety equipment)...

I find it interesting. Partially because the building methods are not commonly used here (lime mortar) and it's not an engineered/architected rebuild. How it's being pulled together is impressive - a veritable mini-series on a shoestring. Got to admire his drive!

Have been watching this for last couple of weeks. Got to love the guys ambition and patience.

Another guy worth checking out (although not Irish either, sorry) is New Yorkshire Workshop. That guy is talented

Thanks for the John McGrath (@JohnMcGrathManInShed) reccommendation ppl. Took McGrath just under 300 videos and 5 years to get to 79K subs. An electrician by trade. He's a good example of what I was looking for, hopefully there are more.

McGrath started off the channel as a hobby and continues to maintain it that way. In a recent interview he talks about being moved by the many letters he recieved from all around the world asking for advice.

Not everybody needs a "gaurantee on a return on investment".

People who are saying there is "A gap in the market" is surely a reference to it being a business opportunity? I'm just pointing out that youtube videos are a lot more work that someone might think at first glance.

If its a hobby thing, great, doesn't matter if you make money on it. All I'm saying is don't go in expecting to make money. I have a hobby channel where I do electronics/Arduino stuff, so I know better than some the work involved.

Don't think it's what your asking for but might scratch your itch OP as I find these power tool repair videos quite addictive to watch.

Thanks for inserting @EoinReardon YouTube Channel.

Really enjoyed watching him and Tom do this Coracle. Welcome blend of traditional.

Looks like the craic was mighty at this year's Ballina Heritage day '23. July 10th.

DIY is a big driver on YouTube and especially with good presenting. As escape to France has shown he publishes daily short 10 min videos with a quick style and update flows.

Yes it's hard work but if you create a very systematic way of capturing and getting content out quickly it can really win out.

As for comments , the reality is the more comments you drive positively or negatively the more views you get. Feeds the algorithm.

So I'd agree there is always a gap in the market for this stuff irish or otherwise but the project has to have substance and ring through with viewers.

Niche channels have niche audiences, so when I'm interested in plastering - I'm watching plastering channels and so forth. I've no interest in plastering outside of this time really, so don't subscribe to plasterers.

On the flip-side Escape to France is highly diverse in terms of the construction objective, well presented and is showing real progress, but it really skims over the technical parts of how much of this type of restoration is really done. But as you correctly pointed out - due to the short nature of the very frequent updates it has a wide audience as it's highly digestible.

Very short very regular. He pulls in over 200k views within 24 hours.

His system is spot on. And the project itself fits the system very well.
