New Windows and door

So I odered two new windows and a door for my house back in march this year. for nearly 12 weeks I had no contact with the contractor until late today (Fri). After waiting 8 weeks I decided to go with another company and ordered with them instead.

The first guy is now pissed that I went with someone else since the windows and door are now made and he would be down on the cost. I did not pay a deposite to him but have paid one to the second company.

Its not very fair I know and I should have probably contacted the contractor myself to see what was happening, but I feel his conduct was quite unprofessional, and he should have contacted me to say there were delays aswell as some other factors as was the case (as he informed me today) but there was no communication of any kind for nearly 12 weeks and then suddenly being contacted at 7:15pm on a friday afternoon so inform me he would be by on Tue to do the job giving only 1 bus day's notice.

    Opinions and possible compromises welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

While I also get annoyed at Irish companies and their predictable lack of communication at times, I think that it was very unfair of you - you should have checked and not lumbered what could be a small business with unsaleable custom made products. Cancel the second one.

What lead time did they tell you when you ordered? I recently ordered a new door and was told it was 12-16 weeks, I followed up for progress report at 10 weeks - didn't hear anything further after ordering, I assumed they thought they were within time so what to communicate?

Would you not go with the 1st guy and both swallow the deposit 50/50.

Did the first company give you a timeline for how long you'd be waiting ?

How much deposit did you give the second company ?

You have messed up a bit by not contacting the first guy before you went ahead with the second company .

The second company probably won't be happy with you cancelling either now after 4 weeks the windows could already be made .

I'd try and get the first guy to go half on the deposit idea , stick to your story that he should of contacting you with updates of delays and hope he agrees with you .

Yes Im pretty sure he said 3-4 weeks but when talking with him yesterday he insisted it was 6. Still I gave a further 2 weeks when I was speaking with a close relative of mine who is a friend of his (this was 6 weeks in ) and I was told there were some personal issues holding things up by up to 2 weeks. At the same time I was promised a phonecall but still nothing in the way of contact. At that point I went with the second company and paid a deposit of Eur800.

He should have contacted you. He told your relative he would. It's a pity you didn't call him but you are the customer. He should have called you before he started making the windows and doors. How long does it take to make these? Curious how he waited to actually go ahead with the job. Why make the windows or doors if there was a doubt. As regards negoiation; well we'll see.
