Help find avensis coilovers

    Hi lads

Have my 2010 avensis coming up to 8 years. Lowered on 40 mm springs with standard shocks the last 5 years. The car is bouncing now over speed bumps. Would you guys have any links that supply coilovers for a 2010 saloon 2.0 diesel avensis. I've tried the Facebook avensis owner page - no joy. Also looked on ebay. But I have no experience with looking at certain companies or even japan itself. Half thinking that if I can find nothing I might get second hand standard suspension from a breakers as a new standard suspension I found priced roughly at €850

    No harm asking here

Running BC's in three of my cars and can't fault them. Plenty of dealers here in Ireland

Bouncy car sounds like failed shocks

It be 90% certain it's my shocks. A new speed bump put down outside my estate the other week and I caught it with a serious clatter. Now I need a boat licence to drive the avensis - it's ridiculous

Thanks for the link, I know you pay for quality but about €1350 is out my budget for a daily diesel although it's a starting point and they seem to be in stock.

I seen new avensis coilovers last year located in England for €400 but i cant track them down - all i remember is they were coloured yellow/orange

I had bc's in one my old civics and they were quality

€400 coilovers will be complete shite, you get what you pay for with coilovers

Its a daily diesel family car, just looking to lower it again when the current lowering springs get took out. Won't see a track, race, drift. Literally cruising around. As. I said my self above you pay for what you get - the bc's I had on a previous civic were quality

I've emailed 6 companies tonight that make coilovers hoping to get sorted with some thing as the car currently is "shocking"

That's how it sits now on 40mm vogtland lowering springs and standard shocks - done well to get 5 year out of the springs

    Just get new shocks

How does it clear speed ramps and kerbs and getting onto ramps can be a curse and when fully loaded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,908 ✭✭✭passatman86

Before the car got bouncy it was perfect on ramps or speed bumps. I did take off a set of aftermarket mudguards I fitted as they scrapped once I lowered it. Much nicer in the bends and corners - although I wouldn't be driving it on

You see that crossed my mind and I questioned myself weather the lowering springs would be worn after 5 years of use and would it feel bouncy as a combination of the springs + shocks both worn. I'd hate to pay a mechanic to replace just shocks and when I get the car back its still a bit too bouncy.

Would you guys risk changing just the 2 front shocks and keep the lowering springs fitted

To check shocks look for signs of dampness and go around the car and bounce each corner as a working shock bounces 1 1/2 times and any more you need to change the pair. Springs only do height and not bounce .

I pushed down on the front corners yesterday and it continued bouncing after I stopped forcing it - they are definitely gone.

I've lowered a few cars in the past but never had a set of lowering springs in a car 5 years - do you know can lowering springs go bad or weak. Is it worth the risk keeping them

    Thanks for the replies

I had lowering springs and standard shocks on a car a few years ago and they were fine. Car was lowered by 25mm though. I replaced only the rear shocks once in the 5 years I owned it.

I think you'll be ok with putting some standard shocks back on. Will definitely be more cost effective than coilovers

You really need to declare lowered suspension and coilovers for insurance purposes. Just saying.

Possibly spring might be smaller now and could be loose when putting standard shocks back in.

When springs go bad they just snap. Putting new shocks on will transform it.

Yep. lost count how many wet shocks , broken coil springs , slashed tyres and shock mounts on German so called technology

I'm not understanding your reluctance to getting new shocks that will control the bounce you're currently getting?

I'm considering getting coilovers, a second hand original suspension from a car breakers or just getting 2 new front shocks and keeping the lowering springs. So 3 options really.

If i sourced a well priced set of coilovers id consider them "so far seen a set for €900"

Advice here seems to be just chance 2 new front shocks - so appreciate the advice so far lads

You could always just put the coils and shocks in it that it was designed for. Would make for a safer journey too. 🤔

Look at my post above regarding sourcing an original set of shocks and springs - as for the originals being safer than aftermarket im not so sure

New shocks is all you need. You will get a full set front and back for €230 on micks garage, don't buy used one's in a breakers yard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,585 ✭✭✭greasepalm

Well you said 2 front keep on bouncing and never mentioned what results you had with rear.

Get the front done and go from there and would also get makes quote from Autoparts suppliers for front shocks and springs so you know where you are.

Dont worry lads im hearing your advice about just chancing 2 front shocks only

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,908 ✭✭✭passatman86

UPDATE : well i went with the advice of just trying front shocks and it worked. Car is driving A1. Also got a full service, front top mounts and inner + outer track rod arms on both sides. Car is perfect. I also kept the original lowering springs fitted.

    Thanks for the advice
