It is possible the kettle has gone faulty and caused the trip

Person above has it spot on, appliances such as kettles I wouldn't attempt a fix. When a kettle trips the RCD/RCB I just get a new kettle. The RCD is to protect you not the kettle and the RCD saved my life with a faulty electric shower. Hadn't have tripped I'd be toast. Still in warranty bring the kettle to the shop which sold it for a replacement.
