1.6 diesel engine. Drives ok and turbo still has poke. No service history though. Am I mad to be considering this?

Depends how much. I wouldn’t be paying more than €3k for it

    More like €2k

Only if it’s cheap. Those 1.6 are a good engine of they are serviced on time with proper oil. However if it’s cheap well worth a gamble

    You do much mileage?

Id disagree - if its the PSA /Ford 1.6 one. When I worked for Volvo that engine was the absolute worst diesel Ive ever come across.

DPFs. Alternators, Flywheels, EGR valves, water pumps , oil pumps all gave problems. - nothing but hassle and probably more so on a high mileage / 13 year old model one with zero service history.

The way to know if its the good engine is its the 8 valve one and not the 16 valve one. The 16v were sold using the DRIVe badge.

Personally I wouldnt touch a V50 / S40 with that type of mileage on it.

thanks lads, I don't do much mileage but I need a big car and also to pull a trailer the odd time. I'm surprised at the majority of the posts. Thought everyone would be totally against the idea. I had the focus estate which I just crashed, same engine I believe. But, the mileage does scare me a little. Has anyone seen these 1.6 litre engines doing 300000 miles?

I had a S40 1.6d at one time which is basically the saloon version of the V50. They are not a big car, they are based on the Mk2 Ford Focus and the interior is quite lacking in space. The boot of the V50 will obviously be a bit bigger and more practical being an estate but front and rear passenger area will be identical to the S40.

Also if your not doing much mileage then your just asking for trouble with the diesel engine. DPFs can and do get blocked on that engine of that vintage if the car is not driven or used as a diesel car is intended to be. My S40 had a few mysterious electrical gremlins too during my ownership. If you want a V50 then I'd look towards the 1.8 petrol version if your not doing much driving. 1.6d is weedy enough in them too so I wouldn't be towing anything other than a very small and light trailer imo.

Yeah I’d also thought they were generally ok once they are meticulously serviced. In fairness I haven’t really worked on them so I take your point.

But having said that any car with no service history and high mileage is a risk.

Mileage too high I think . Know someone who bought one with high miles from UK a few years back - spent a fair few quid on it . Would want to be getting it for very little money to make sense buying it

The dpfs in them just **** themselves after around 75k, We had customers with 2 year old rep-mobiles needing Dpfs with full histories on them. The top end of them used to get stuffed with carbon meaning a rocker cover off and cleaning. Alternators used to just pack up on them after a couple of years.

Dont get me wrong I love the V50 - that and the V70 are probably 2 of my favourite cars of all time and I would buy one myself tomorrow if I didnt have a company vehicle but Id probably look as bazz26 said at the 1.8 petrol.

Same engine as the Mondeo of that era that never missed a beat.

That the same for all those 1.6’s? I’ve one in my mk1 C5. Wonder will it give me the same trouble now.

We had an S40 with the 1.8 petrol engine a while back, never had a day's trouble with it. I'd run a mile from that 1.6D with no service history, they really don't take lack of maintenance well.

tanks lads....still, the fact that the car has so many miles alone is impressive, not to mention it hasn't a dent, scratch and is still shiny
