Am I being slowly poisoned?

    Hello All,

A month ago I moved into a house in East Cork and it's my first time being in a property that has a septic tank. Out ensuite periodically (at least once a day - usually at night) stinks of sulfur drainage smell. It usually happens at night when we run the taps (seems to be coming from sink and shower drain as opposed to toilet) and its disgusting. As it happens I've been getting headaches since I moved in. My partner is unaffected physically. We obviously open a window and ventilate the bathroom when it happens.

My question is: do you think this is a septic tank issue? It was only de-sludged in January. There is another bathroom downstairs that sometimes pongs but rarely. House is 30 years old. I have to admit I'm sensitive to environmental things and so the headaches may be something else but I don't know. Lived in my last place in Dublin for 10 years without any issues.

I'm doing my best to find a plumber to have a look at it but in the meantime, does anyone think I'm being slowly poisoned?

    😬

    Hi ,

it sounds like the piping to the septic tank is not vented properly or one of the Traps /U bends has gone dry . Run water through every sink, shower , bath etc. see does the smell go . If it is still there , check the vent pipes outside the house and make sure they exist and are not blocked . You could also lift one of the AJ covers a little to let it vent but cover it with something to prevent anything from getting into it .

Check that the shower trap is all there etc as well.

One of my old rentals had an awful smell and couldn't figure it out for the first few weeks. Ended up going to clean that filter and the inner part was completly missing so there was no water trap. Presumably the old tenant had simply thrown it away when clogged instead of cleaning it and putting it back in.

Do you have a well? If so, I'd guess that like ourselves the sulfur smell - rotten eggs - is coming from that water coming out of your kitchen sink?

Alternatively, removing and cleaning the s-trap piping under a sink may reveal a build up of congealed wasted. We had a foul smell coming from our sink. On inspection of the pipes, there was a mess in the dishwasher pipe that had hardened and was the cause of the smell.
