08 CRV 2.2cdti charging issue

    Hi all,

Have an issue with the CRV about a month ago where the car wouldn't start sometimes in the morning .

Had a spare good battery in the shed so just stuck that in and didn't think of checking the alternator.

No issue till the other day, went out to start it and wouldn't start so I checked the voltage of the battery after an hour's drive and battery was 12.10v which I know is low and means a recharge . Started it up and idling it is reading around 12.9V, 13V. Same with 3-4k rpm.

Stuck lights , blower and wipers on to see the reading. Stays down at 12.9V even with revving to 3-4k rpm.

Now before I go spend money on an alternator, is this a sign of a bad alternator on a honda? Reading online that honda have some kind of smart charging systems with low, medium ,high charge rates.

Could it be with the smart system or alternator?

    Any help appreciated.

Should be charging between 13.8 and 14.75 if memory serves me right. Check it with a multi meter while its running with as much drain on it as you can - lights, wipers , heated rear screen etc.

If its between those numbers then the alternator is good and doesnt need replacing.

How sure are you that the battery is a good one? If its been sitting in the shed I doubt its held its charge depending how long it was in there for.

It sound like its not as good as you think.

The alternator could be for want of a better word "fighting" with a dying battery giving you all those inconsistent readings.

Id put a brand new battery known good battery in first and then test it with a multi meter while its running.

Its not all about volts remember - its the amps available to turn the starter thats more important than the voltage. You can have a battery reading 12.9 volts but not giving the correct amount of amps needed to run everything.

For what its worth I dont think Ive ever fitted an alternator to a CRV - they are fairly bulletproof.

    Id go with battery first.

    Sorry only got this sorted.

    Thanks hellrazer!

Tried a new battery as you suggested but was getting the same readings after a day of driving it so was defo something up with the alternator.

Well I have to say this job was a pig of a job!

To get the alternator out I had to remove the whole radiator and fans. But only come to this conclusion after battered knuckles and ALOT of cursing out Mr.Honda.

Got the alternator out and sent it to be reconditioned. Pulley was gone and some internal bits. Was about €130 to repair it.

Stuck a new alternator belt in there while I was at it.

Car now running and charging between 13.8v and 14.1v.

Need to give it a long drive to make sure cooling system is running ok and no leaks!
