Hi all, we got a rescue German Shorthaired Pointer in 2017. He's a lovely dog, very quiet, good manners. Was badly abused as a pup and so is nervous around men and if they is a long noise like a bang etc. Anyways, we have brought him on holidays with us nearly all the time as he doesn't do well in the dog minders. However, we were away with him for the last 4 nights. He was extremely anxious if he wasn't in the room with us, whinging and giving out basically. We were visiting a house we had been in before so he was familiar with his surroundings. If i was moving around at all he was basically on my heels.

I am wondering is there any kind of a calming tablet or something i could give him to relax him. He got for his walks 2 or 3 times a day, was a bit nervous eating his food but did eat it. Or any advice that anyone would have?

    Thanks

I wonder if a Pet Remedy plug-in would help? You could maybe have it on at home for a week or two before you go and then just plug it in where you’re staying? They also have a spray - I find it great when my guy is anxious and spray his bedding / a bandana etc. Are you bringing bedding from home so he has something familiar?

Is he crate trained? I wonder if he was in a covered crate and had that option to retreat into if he would feel safer?

A thundershirt or similar may also help.

I have a rescue pointer who basically lives in my bedroom, when we go away he is stressed the whole time to the point he injures himself, used to be his tail, now it's the top of his head, barking and throwing his head up and hitting it against the ceiling of the wooden crate in the van 😞 in my bedroom he feels safe, he is even slightly stressed when in the rest of the house. Bran is very dog reactive though, that's what stresses him out, he knows even if we drive past a dog walking and his crate isn't beside a window so I don't know how he knows they're out there!

I've tried so many remedies but none have ever had a positive effect on him unfortunately.

Thanks for the response, no hes not crate trained He sits on the couch during the dog or in his bed in the kitchen. If i am out pottering in the garden he will come out with me and fool around but if there is no one outside with him he whines at the door. We have had him away about 6 times before and this is the first time we have really had an issue. I had him on CBD oil before for arthritis so am going to reintroduce that again.

You could try zylkene. You'd need to start giving it a few days in advance of stressful events and keep giving it to him throughout. We've had excellent results with one of our cats on it, but it definitely doesn't seem to work for every animal. Worth trying though?
