Fixing of roof tiles

    Hi,

I'm in the process of having the flat roof of an (attached) garage replaced with a new pitched (hipped) roof. The roofer has most of the tiles up (all done in the space of a day) and I've just been informed by one of his workers that they're fixing with a single nail per three tiles. I've located the relevant data sheet (Northstone, Donard), which explicitly says "all tiles should be fitted to BS5534:2014 where a minimum requirement specifies a minimum of all tiles nailed once". This is obviously a reference to British Standards (building regulations?) rather than Irish building standards/regulations and also the manufacturer's guidelines, but is there any reason to interpret this differently in the context of an Irish build? Does anybody here have experience with anything like this? What's in Irish building regulations? I've so far been unable to find anything.

The roofer so far isn't very receptive to constructive feedback, let's say, so I'd like to have my facts straight before I approach him about this (though I obviously need to do this sooner rather than later as he'll probably declare himself complete soon enough).

Link to the roof tile datasheet: https://www.northstonerooftiles-gb.com/assets/img/donard-data-sheet.jpg

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

If you want to get confirmation and facts straight speak to the tile manufacturer's technical department.

The fixings can be dictated by location, height, size of roof, exposure, etc. - notwithstanding the 'minimum' requirement you have outlined above.

There is an Irish Standard for tiling as well which might be worth looking at.

I think the guidance on fixings may have changed recently but the roofer might just be doing it the way he has always done it.

Building products such as roof coverings and the methodology used are not specifically detailed in the building regulations but are subject to various codes and approval by the NSAI. Referring to the manufacturer's technical documents would be the norm.

I did some more googling, and also spoke to the manufacturer. SR82:2017 is the relevant standard for Ireland, effective January 2018. As the document is quite costly, I still haven't actually read it, but my impression is that the Irish requirements are not quite as onerous as the UK ones. Either way, my issue has been resolved. Thanks for the suggestions.
