To make it interesting the more unusual the plant the better. To start off I'm not going to make it easy, this is a bit of a rarity that might flower this year but I suspect I'll be waiting a few more years, normally 5-6 from planting. Its growing in woodland shade (ideal conditions) is currently about 50cm tall and will hopefully reach 2 meters when in full flower (when it will die - just typical). For anyone into crossword clues a good hint might be this a plant that will get your hart pumping at eight thousand eight hundred and forty nine meters.

btw I've checked and google image finder doesn't come up with the answer ;-)

Just in case anyone wondering this is what it turned out like

Bought from Mount Venus Nurseries and flowered in its second season which afaik is fairly unusual was expecting to wait about 5 years for it to flower. Needless to say it will die now but should produce a load more new plants around the edge of the old one. Then the wait starts all over.

You'll still have to guess what it is.

My limited experience seems to indicate moist woodland shade is the key to growing them. No need for any special cultivation, I just dug in loads of compost in a damp unused corner planted one and thats what happened. Also strimmed surrounding weeds, hand pulled any close to the stem and mulched. Was hoping its was going to be a bit taller but maybe next time.

Mount Venus nurseries are well worth a visit (they had to move from where the name came from several years ago), followed by lunch in the highly recommended Hazelhouse cafe and woodwork school (yes the same one from that weird ad), which is just a little further on.

If you're thirsty afterwards and have a designated driver a smallish trek to the Blue Light pub would round the day off perfectly in this weather.

'Check your bank balance first' yes I am really quite grateful I don't live all that close to a garden centre! Its a bit like cake from someone else's plate having no calories, buying plants doesn't count as real money....

I don't think I paid the current €14.95 price for the Cardiocrinum but hard to argue it wasn't money well spent. On the other hand some of their stuff is a little on the small side so no good for anyone that isn't going to really look after it.

Yes, that's it! It would have niggled endlessly at me, but that's kinda what it suggests, even though it isn't. I'm pretty sure I had one at some stage but I am still trying to figure out what will grow in this garden and stuff disappears.

Don't think it would be something I'd plant currently, ground is too dry and scorched and I don't really have any shadier areas that aren't wild (like the pictures). I'm always on the lookout for plants that can just about look after themselves if given the right conditions. If my neighbour goes again I think I'd get a few Veratrum Nigrum for old times sake and they will go in that same area.
