On street PHEV Charge cost

Hi all, maybe I'm being really thick here but I don't understand how I could be charged so much for the privilege of using an on street EV charger, I also have to pay for the parking. The €6 odd is for the electricity I assume, what is the €17.2893 for??? I've read through many posts about charges but have never seen anything this expensive.

I have emailed KIA charge with my query also but thought someone here might be able to shed some light on what this charge is for:

It looks like there's a per minute component of the charging involved, possibly an overstay fee?

It should show the prices of the charger on the app including the overstay fee

Could be that the overstay of 45mins+ has been incorrectly applied to that 22kw charger by ESB. Kia may just send you to EBS

That's a shameful price, 84 cent a kwh, the 88 cents an hour on top is not the worst I have seen just for having it plugged in, freshmile 4 cent a minute works out at 2,40 per hour, I don't buy its a precious resource excuse, if you want a transition to electric vehicles put the damn chargers in and charge a fair price.

Making it more expensive than fossil fuel is not going to help.

It's the same MSP behind it as Mini Charging, what you've shown is a charge of €6.28 for 7.14 kWh, and an additional charge of €17.28, the additional charge is usually for the connection fee plus any overstay fees. According to their displayed prices you should of only paid the single charging session fee. Something has clearly gone wrong.

You should get an eCars card instead of using the Kia service, it would work out much cheaper for you (even without the bugs)

@the_amazing_raisin, not an overstay fee, I checked that. I was just about 2 hours and not even fully charged either time... This is what is listed under Tariffs on KIA Charge website

@Pistachio Normally on most of these charging apps if you select a particular charger it should show the exact tariff for that charger

The only thing I could think of is that there's a per minute tariff. It's possible it kicks in after 45 mins like a DC charger or something

It's quite possible it's a mistake as liamog said, so worth querying with Kia Charge

I'd recommend getting an Ecars account since they're generally better for their own chargers (while being utterly useless otherwise)

You might also want to look at Elli tariffs. I think they're cheaper than Ecars for AC if you get the paid subscription. Depending on how often you'll be charging it might be worthwhile

It's a multi party relationship. CPO (charge point operator) to eMSP (emobility service provider), eMSP to manufacturer, customer to eMSP.

In Kia's case the eMSP is called Digital Charging Solutions, they are also the eMSP for Mini and BMW.

The rates are different for Mini customers compared to Kia ones, it looks like Kia isn't subsiding the charging service for it's customers when they take out a membership.

Speaking of per minute charging and shameless pricing, in Austria Elli chargers the guts of 21c/min at AC. With a PHEV charging at 3.6kW that's €3.5/kWh

Considering Kia have a lot of PHEVs for sale (almost all their models from the Ceed upwards have a PHEV variant), they're really making a balls of the public charging

If you don't have a home charger then it's a struggle to see what the point of buying one is

Surely it would be more straightforward to use the app or card/fob of the charger in question. Having a phev myself I rarely if ever use public charging as it just takes ages to get anything into the battery.

In a properly functioning system it should be more straightforward to use one contract with an eMSP instead of having to carry around multiple charging apps/cards. I don't think we'd put up with having seperate payment cards for Dunnes, Tesco's and your local pub.

True, but Dunnes and Tesco don't force you to use only their loyalty cards, you can use a more generalised form of payment (aka, money) if you aren't interested in their loyalty program

Charging networks aren't as open minded unfortunately

I'm not aware of Tesco or Dunne's offering their own proprietary payment systems, are you part of some trial? Or do you just have a loyalty card which is separate to payment requirements.

Why do you think there is a benefit to the consumer in having to carry multiple charging cards instead of having one contract with a mobility services provider? The main reason an eMSP is needed is for the implementation of ISO 15118 Plug&Charge. The goal is to load one payment provider into your car and then experience Tesla like charging where you simple plug in and all the authentication/payments are handled automatically.

In order for such a system to work their needs to fairer and transparent pricing so situations like what have happened with Kia Charge and @Pistachio aren't allowed to happen.
