PoE Question

Hi All

I'm looking to install a PoE Reolink Video Doorbell. We cabled Cat5e from attic network switch to front door when renovating. My first use of PoE so new territory for me. What actual device do I need - a PoE injector at my network switch ??. I see ref to PoE "splitters" but suspect they're for something else. Reolink site says 24v - I presume this is spec for injector.

PoE splitters are simply that, i.e. they split off the network and power wires from the cable into another RJ-45 plug for the network side and a barrel DC connector for power, and are meant for use with non-PoE devices. In your case the device is PoE enabled already, so no splitter is needed.

PoE injectors are used at the (non-PoE) switch end of things and consist of a small box containing a power supply and two RJ-45 sockets, one to connect to the switch port and the other to the cable connected to the device.

The 24V refers to the injector voltage.

What make/model network switch are you connecting to the doorbell?

I assumed, maybe incorrectly, that based on the questions he was asking that he didn't have a PoE capable switch but maybe he does.

Reolink devices are great but their spec sheets are woeful for POE, many don't seem to mention what standard to use including the doorbell.

I found the following buried on their website when I was looking myself (its not mentioned specifically as requiring 802.3at so by implication is 802.3af).

I also installed one for my Dad and used the below PoE injector (ignore the reference to 802.3at/802.3af in the title, they list multiple models the lower priced one is just 802.3af but that is sufficient):

I have a passive TPLink 16-port switch in the attic - no PoE. I use this to distribute to Ethernet ports around the house. I'm just looking to avail of the existing Cat5e to the front door.

That single injector looks sufficient for this I think.
