It was a big event at the time. I remember the plane parked there for weeks until the outcome was settled. Used to pass it en route to/from Kerry. The pilot returned a few times and was popular in the town and AFAIR was mad a freeman (or some award?) . Strange to think thatin the 40 years since then only a few miles of the Mitchelstown-Mallow road have been improved (opened this year at KIldorrery) and that work only recently started near the Racecourse at that dangerous junction at Lombardstown.

Notice the pilot had a cigarette in his hand as he talked. Not something you would see today, in Mallow or anywhere else.
