    Hi All

As title suggests My daughter is looking to get her first car just passed her test and about 9K is about as much as she can afford

So far looking on done deal adverts and facebook about all we have seen that she likes are about year 151 possibly 162

possibly Hyundai I 10 and she also likes the fiat 500

Have seen a few of each advertised

So on a car with asking price of 9k- 10 K how much ( if any ) could you realistically expect to knock off

Could you get more off a private sale than a garage ?

Also what kind of mileage do you draw the line at

    Many thanks

How long is a piece of string? It depends on how well the car is priced to begin with, how motivated the seller is to get rid, your negotiating skills etc. You might find a bargain or you might not.

There is no cut off point for mileage. I will buy a car with any mileage so long as it’s reflected in the price. Just set yourself a limit like 160,000km and go from there.

It depends. If the car is keenly priced you'll get very little off and vice versa.

Do a bit of homework and see what your €9k will buy.

What is the best way to pay for this kind of amount

and would you bother with a history check

Seen a 142 fiat 500 with 80000 miles in a local garage but they are asking 8950 which I thought was a bit steep but daughter likes it

    Am i out of touch

Bank transfer I'd imagine. Yes ask the dealer to do the data check.

Do some research on Fiat 500 prices. If you can find something comparable cheaper use that as a bargaining tool.

    p.s. I had a 500 as a rent a car in Spain. Enjoyed it.

Neither of those cars have 80k miles. And 80k isn’t high for an 8 year old car.

80k miles is for a small petrol car

Neither of the cars have 80k miles. And regardless it’s still not high. Its only 125k km’s. Small petrol cars can easily do twice that mileage with regular servicing

Thanks for the ad's Henry and for taking the trouble to look

I am noticing that a lot of the Fiat 500 see to be advertised in miles as opposed to KM

Is it likely that the ones advertised in mi are imports?

    Cheers

It looks better to put it in miles, 75,000 miles or 120,000 kilometres?? they are the same but one looks a lot worse.

I bought a new Octavia in 2016. Sticker was 25k I paid 23k. It would be helpful if people put up what they managed to bargain a car down to as most of us wouldn't have a clue.

The used car market is alot different today than it was in 2016. Covid and Brexit have made demand outstrip supply. Sellers don't have to try as hard these days especially at the cheaper end of the market. If you do manage to negotiate a chunk of change off a car now then you either got lucky or the asking price was too high to begin with.

It was luck rather than my negotiation skills, which are terrible. Young salesman needing to hit a target or be let go..... he wasn't there when I picked up the car. A lot of us have no clue, I was shocked how quick this lad dropped €500 increments at a time, I was going to try and get a couple of hundred off but he had gone from 25 thousand and a couple of hundred to 23 thousand in seconds.

If there were many examples of people saying " car was private sale and €9500 and I ended up paying €8850 then it would help other users no end. Of course there will be the usual suspects to say " should have got it for €8400" but it is a good starting point for the novices.

Always do a history check and always get your mechanic, or someone with knowledge of cars, to check it over before you buy regardless if buying from a dealer or private.

It's a sellers market for cars so you may get nothing off if the car is popular, good cars don't last long after being advertised. Plenty of cars bought a few years ago are now worth several thousand Euro more.

    Cheers Folks

    Managed to pick up a 152 Fiat 500 with 100.000Km or 62Kmiles

Got €500 off the asking price

She is happy & I'm happy I dont have to keep looking :-)

Thanks for all the input :-) everyone
