Paint primer question

    Hi folks,

Im new to DIY so please go easy on me. We got panelling installed in the hall and upstairs and rather than pay someone obscene money to paint it I’m doing it myself.

One question I have though. I’m caulking around the joints and where the wood meets. But I keep finding that even when levelling off the caulk there’s a very tiny dip between both ends of the panels.

so my question is. Will paint primer fill in those tiny gaps after caulking and make the panel gaps disappear or do I need to do better with the caulk?

    many thanks!

Hi ya. Well done on taking on such as task.

The concave gaps sound like where the caulk is shrinking slightly. Some of the cheaper stuff does that as it's bulked out with water-based solvents. Either move to more expensive caulk or do what some professionals do and only caulk the joints after the first coat of primer or paint, and the caulk will shrink less. If you do the latter you you also only need to caulk the gaps that you see as opposed to every slight gap. I still recommend the better branded caulk rather than the house-special in some of the DIY stores. Hopefully this helps.

Oh, and photos of the work are always appreciated on here!

    I did this myself.

Use the good brands or spend more time painting, and sometimes spending the same amount of money due to buying more tins of primer!

What finish are you going for?

Thanks guys that’s great help! What brands would be more expensive to go for?

The wife is in charge of the finish. I just do the grunt work. I will be informed when she makes up her mind
