Hyundai i40 problems

A friend of mine has a 2012 Hyundai i40 1.7 diesel. Fuel filter was replaced about 2 months ago by a Blueprint onw with same part number as the old one.

Last Friday as he was climbing a small hill the car lost power and cut out . It took a while to get it restarted and it lost power again after a short distance.

I scanned it and got 2 codes :

    1) ECM (Engine Control Module (High power)

P1186 Minimum Pressure At Engine Speed Too Low.

    2) ECM (Engine Control Module (Low Power)

P1186 Minimum Pressure At Engine Speed Too Low.

I only recently began using a scan tool and was a bit puzzled that the same code appeared twice.

I cleared the codes , car started and seemed fine.

While driving today he experienced a very brief hesitation and loss of power - but no codes were recorded and car drove OK otherwise.

Would appreciate any help or advice/suggestions as to what may be causing this problem. Intermittent problems are very difficult to come to grips with.

Might be an electrical problem in one of the fuel injectors.

I had a similar problem some years ago with a 2.2Lt Diesel Honda Accord.

Might be worth having it checked out.

Was the filter bled of air afterwards?

On the fuel filter housing there's a spring loaded cap that needs to be pressed numerous times to bleed diesel through, take the little black cap off the pipe near bleeder and pump till diesel comes through, it'll get quite stiff also.

Also check the water sensor at the bottom is not leaking they've a crappy seal on them and can piss diesel out the bottom, I used to just take the water sensor off and use the white screw drain plug that comes with the filter.

It was bled thoroughly using the spring loaded cap and started immediately.

There could be a problem with the water sensor as you say because I feel it is a fuel related problem. And the filter is in such an awkward location 🤬.

Will see how I can check this out.

    Thanks for replies.

Fuel pumps are a known issue on the I40.

Will give you that low fuel pressure code. Easy way to know is if your oil level is increasing- check it over a few days. They dump diesel into the engine when the seal in them fails.

Other than that Ive seen the same fault with a non genuine fuel filter being used.

Hellrazer is probably right, if I listened to him I'd still have my i40 lol

Thanks for those ideas - just what I was looking for.

I will change the filter first of all as when I discussed it with the owner he said he thought it was slower to start in the morning after the filter change .But it wasn't 'too bad' so he just carried on.

Can also check oil level daily to see how that is doing.

If fuel pump is the problem I presume replacing it involves a lot of work ?

Id put a genuine filter on it first - theyre supposedly due every 60k but theres no way they last that long. Id advise doing every 25-30k.

The pump is a nightmare to do - there is a special Hyundai / Kia tool for doing them which saves literally hours doing the job.

Go with the filter first and watch the oil level for huge increases - its usually a very fast increase.
