Buying license plates

    Hey folks,

I paid vrt on a car on Saturday and need to buy license plates. I want to get one of each of the two legal sizes and I am finding it somewhat difficult to find online. It seems the vast majority of the nct legal plates in the more square shape are not the legal 340*220 size. A couple sites are selling metal pressed plates in the legal size but they are two e the price. I looked up the statute on license plates and it's legal to have a smaller plate when the standard ones will not fit. So I am wondering if anywhere sells the standard plastic plates in the legal sizes or is it the case that if I mount a Japanese size plate that is marginally smaller onto the front of the car that it will pass the nct even though the standard one will fit I will pass.. I have not checked with any physical shops, perhaps this is the way to go, I doubt anywhere would be open today though..

I’m not sure what you mean exactly, but there are generally 3 different types of plates you can buy in motor factors.

    Oblong (Standard EU size)

    Jap (For Jap Imports)

    Square (Sometimes found on Jeeps)

Go to your local motor factors tomorrow and tell them what you need. I have used all three above and have passed the NCT.

Halfords do them. Open today if needed urgently. About 40 - 50 quid front and back when I got them a while back. Expensive enough but so are all B&M stores.

Need to bring all paperwork for the car too.

The NCT manual lists two legal sizes, 340x220mm and 520x110mm, you are allowed use another plate where those ones will not fit, ie the back plate on Jap cars fits in a space for Jap size plates so they don't expect you to modify the car to fit the EU size..

I want to put a square plate on the front mounted offset beside the radiator grill, any size plate will fit, I'd prefer a 'square' shape than an oblong.

Have you ever mounted the jeep or jap size on the front of a car and passed the NCT or just on the back where it fits the space?

I rang halfords (thanks 0ph0rce0), they do the 340 size but 21 euro per plate, I could live with 42 euro. So far the best I found was Eireplates who do the 340 size in pressed metal so about 60 euro shipped for a pair..

Yep, I’ve fitted square plates and Jap plates on the front and passed.
