So I have a 2017 A Merc. Having issues with lights coming on. Initially it was the yellow exclamation light. That got fixed by the garage clearing the on board computer after having been initially told I needed a new sensor. Today a solid yellow sensor light came on.

You need it diagnosed to find out what the issue is, unfortunately nobody here can help you, maybe try a different garage?

There's lots of MB independent's around, and anyone with an iCarsoft CR Pro OBD reader will be able to run a diagnostics scan on any MB ( or other makes as well) You should not have to go to a specific MB Dealership to get it done. OBD readers were made compulsory in all cars since 1996, so its not exactly new tec ( even if it has gotten more complicated as time moves on) Every garage, regardless of being a main dealer, or an independent will have OBD readers now as standard. You should not have a problem getting it scanned, and having it generate a fault code, for which a search on the internet will usually give you an explanation and description of the corresponding fault that matches the code. Good Luck.

That's something to be careful of, obd was made standard but only for a limited number of engine codes. Obd scanner don't read abs faults, airbag faults, or manufacturer specific faults so you may have zero codes showing on your obd reader but a better scanner (that connects to the same obd port) may show 10 or 15 codes

Reading the fault codes is the easy bit. Knowing where the issue lies i.e. wiring fault, sensor, bad earth, other defective component bringing on the light is where you need the brand specific experience, either main dealer or specialist independent. Otherwise it's a guessing game

Yes, that's very true, plus you do need to be careful when using a scanner, and especially one that allows you to make changes, or generate activities like performing a DPF regen etc. Personally, I use the iCarsoft CR Pro, ( iCarsoft make Mercedes Benz specific scanners too) which will read MB codes, but also other makes...I've used it on VW's and Skoda's ( which generically are similar, if not actually VAG identical, and RossTec make a scanner specifically for the VAG range ) and also on BMW's. Works fine for me.

Yes, also very true. I remember very well when I worked at a Main Dealership, often when a customer described the problem over the phone, I knew immediately what was wrong. But nowadays, its all down to fault codes, but like the older cars, they can follow a recognized pattern too. Google a stored fault code, and in a lot of cases, it can be well documented. The problem is ( as always was) the problem that defies a solution.
