Just wondering if anyone has any advice in regards to the E Class Mercedes.

Im upgrading from my old 09 A6 which has finally given up the ghost. I do on average around 500Km a week give or take with work. I was looking at a 2017 A6, even the Jag XF at one stage but not sure about relaibility.

However i was looking at an A6 yesterday and the dealer pointed out the E Class he has in stock, never really considered it before but price wise wasnt far off the A6 and took it for a test drive and was really impressed with it, around 170k km on it though.

I guess im used to the A6 and know what to expect in terms of reliability and servicing costs etc but dont have any experience when it comes to Mercedes so just putting it out there to anyone that may have a bit more insight.

not a fan of the previous model A6 , mileage is high on the Merc. Would want to be big saving on it compared to average mileage example .

The E Class is a very comfortable car and they just eat the miles, built for commuting really. However like any premium brand when something goes wrong outside of routine maintenance then it can be expensive. You should search around the various owners forums to get an idea of common problems with the model to give you an idea of owners real world experiences.

Also 170k km is roughly 110k miles. Hardly excessive on a now 6 year old diesel car and still less than 20k miles per year. Would want to be priced right to reflect the mileage and having a good service history would be important.

E class much more modern than an A6 in 2017 because it only came out, a6 didn't release new model until 182 plate. Uncle has one, nice car, very comfortable, reliable for him anyway.

I can recommend the XF but be careful with the 2 litre ingenium engine. Engine issue solved after 2018. Car is super reliable other than that engine, and a great drive

Disagree on the "engine issue solved after 2018" bit. They just made some of the engine bits out of a slightly harder cheese. But they are still made of cheese....

    The 2017 E Class E220 diesel has the new 1950cc OM654 engine with 195bhp.

I have the previous E220 model with the previous OM651 engine. It has been extremely reliable with no issues to speak of in the 6 years (and 80,000kms) I have had it.

I suggest that you look through the service records meticulously. If it has been serviced by an MB main dealer, the service record will be electronic but available to any main dealer.

The 9 speed auto gearbox was also new for the 2017 model. I believe that it has a good reputation but it also does need to be serviced on schedule (every 6 years or 100,000km, I believe). Again that should be in the electronic service record. The ATF fluid is specific to that gearbox

If you see any discrepancies in the service records, e.g. gaps in the history or using "Fred the shed" for servicing I would walk away.

By the way, if the servicing was by an independent MB specialist who used the correct spec oils & ATF it might be even better than a main MB dealer. The records of those might be in good old paper form.

Think they are a stunning car although a guy i know with one told me they are expensive to run.

Is expensive related to fuel economy or servicing costs?

I have found diesel MBs to be very economical to run from an MPG perspective. Noticably better than an Audi I had previously.

I would agree that main dealer servicing is expensive. It is for all the so called prestige brands.

Genuine MB parts are more expensive than spurious equivalents but do come with a 12 month warranty - I have never had to claim on that so I don't know how that works.

Adblue pump seems to be an issue on them, friend paid close to €2k to sort it on theirs. Car was faultless otherwise in approx 250k of driving.

I have a 2017 e220d Estate myself and only started reading about this online recently - any further info? Seems it's usually just the sensor that goes but MB insist on changing the whole tank! €2k is nuts!

I'd consider an A4 also at that budget, you'd go a year or two higher and into a newer model.

The A4 model was launched in 2016, same year as the E Class. A4 is also a rival to the smaller C Class too rather than E Class.

I had a loaner of a brand new A4 when car was in for service. My E-Class was 4-5 years old at that stage. I'd take the older E-Class any day
