    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has come across a system that will notify a deaf person of a fire alarm activation within an apartment unit?

The trouble is it appears you there is no product available that can notify a person of both the self contained system activating and the communal system activating within the apt block)

The below will look after the self contained alarm, other than that it looks like a strobe will need to be installed linked back to the communal alarm. I was hoping to find a product that would pick up both alarm types.

Contact Chime or other deaf support groups. There are alarms available that will light up or vibrate when the main fire alarm sounds.

The beacon and vibration alarm should probably work wirelessly with EI alarms

The communal system I don't know , beacons would probably have to be wired into the sounder circuit . Theye not guaranteed to wake a deaf person.

Sounder strobes or preferably VADS (visual alarm devices) should be installed in the apartment from the communal system. There also pillow pads available that will vibrate should the alarm activate. Scope communications in the UK, do an interface that will send a signal to a vibrating pager device.

If you want to guarantee someone waking up, really you need to have a vibrating alert of some sort - pillows or 'bed shakers'.

A strobe can only do so much - If someone's deeply asleep they won't necessarily sense it at all.

The apartment alarms would be easy enough to sort out

A few good neighbors with keys might be a help too

The main panels will have contacts and outputs that could be utilized . No idea how you get that to the apartment for a deaf person

I don't know which end of the country you are in, but it would be worth emailing one of the Deaf organisations. They're often really good on the practicalities of technology.

Just, for obvious reasons, email rather than ring.

Good links and good point about emailing.

I'll also add that if the person is under the care of the HSE they may receive advice from the community occupational therapist if they visit often, but the links provided above or local deaf association would probably be more responsive to their needs anyway.
