How to adjust temperature on this power shower

Temperature has gotten gradually hotter over the last few months to the point it's scalding me now especially for the first 2-3 minutes of a shower.

When I adjust the lower knob anti clockwise nothing happens, the temp remains scalding.

If I get a narrow Stanley blade or underneath that small metal disc in the middle of the knob is there something behind it that will allow me to make sure more cold water comes through than what is currently? Failing that where or how do I adjust the mix of hot to cold water?

Pah! That's exactly the same unit as I have in my shower. Fitted in 2003. Somewhat unlike yours - mine gets progressively hotter and hotter over the period of the shower. Mine is not bad enough to warrant a replacement, but it's a bit annoying.

Your issue sounds like a mechanical problem in the regulator. I don't think you'll be able to fix it, but to open the unit just slip a flathead under the round covers and it will reveal a phillips head screw. Unscrew it and then take off that face-plate and you'll see the mixer etc.

The problem with your shower overheating is caused by the thermostatic valve inside has gone past his lifespan and has failed. You need to open up the covers and replace it. It's usually held in place with screws in the side of the body under the plastic outer covers.

The thermostatic valve is commonly called the "cartridge".

Find out the name of your type of shower brand and go to plumber providers and show them the above photo and they will source a new one. Expect to pay about 150 euros approx.

As the other poster said it's also referred to as the mixer valve.

thanks for this. Yeah those shower units were absolutely everywhere during the Celtic Tiger years, lots of hotels and houses have them. Then those mixer bars came in which seems to be what people go for now.

Strange thing about mine is the knob will only turn to 180 degrees, it wont turn a full 360 whereas it does on the same shower unit in another bathroom in the house. Ive tried pressng the red button on the knob but that seems to do nothing.

yeah I was looking at a few Youtube videos last night on it and it does sound like the thermostatic valve is gone which would explain the lack of cold water being outputted thus making it scalding hot. But there was me thinking it is probably about 30 or 40 euro for a new one lol that was wishful thinking. Will take the photo to Chadwicks on Tuesday and hopefully they'll be able to identify it. Thanks for the pointers.

So Chadwick's got back to me, the shower unit is by a company called Ideal Standard and the thermostatic valve is €168 with a 4-5 days delivery time. Model number details on invoice below

Will hopefully have it fixed next week and that will be an end to the scalding hot showers. The previous owner to me redid the bathrooms in 2005 so it's worked away for 18 years without failing which is a pretty good run in fairness.

Thanks for the update. That part is listed as an eye-watering £315.94 STG inc-VAT on some UK sites. 💥

Lot to be said for a manual mixer, I like it anyway even if you need to adjust the balance a little during your shower.
