Got a fine through the door a few weeks ago. Only person in the house so automatically opened it without looking. Fine from Irishrail for 122 quid or something to a random name.

I'm assuming that someone got caught on train without ticket and game random name and random address which happened to be mine. I can easily prove I'm not this person, wasn't on the train at the given date and that said person never lived in the house. So I ain't payin' sh*t.

Am I legally obliged to do anything? I'd kinda like to see where it goes.

If it is not addressed to you no action is required.

Yeah. I kinda wanna see where this goes. It may be a bit of a dick move but I'd like to see how high the fine goes before they send lads with crowbars 😀

Stick up the name here on boards , it might be one of us.

Alternatively block up your front door.

Yeah, it is a bit of a dick move. It's not their fault someone used your address. Just let them know there's no one at that address with that name and get on with your life.

Same thing happened here with a Luas fine, when I rang them up they just thanked me and canceled the fine over the phone.

I was in the train this week and two young adults in my carriage were issued with fixed penalty notices for travelling on a student ticket when they were not students. The defaulter nearest to me had no identification on her with a name and address so whatever address she gave might have been false. One other person could prove he was a student, and another one did not engage with the ticket checkers and was met at the next station by rail security.

Giving false details is a regular occurrence and it might be advisable to contact the Revenue Protection Unit or whoever issued the notice to make your point, because a defaulter has 21 days to pay before further action is initiated.

Trust me, you don't want to meet the lads with crowbars! They won't be particularly interested in your explanation, especially when it turns out you are messing them about.

Put the letter back in its envelope and use a bit of stick tape. Write: 'opened in error, unknown at this address' and drop it in the nearest post office box. Stop wasting people's time and inconveniencing yourself in the long term.
