Replacement Engine under warranty

Hi All,

I bought a car out of a main dealership last year. About a month ago the engine failed and it was brought into the garage/dealership. As the car is under warranty they are replacing the engine.

However they say that the warranty on the new engine will only run as as long as the existing warranty, which runs out later this year. To me this make no sense, yes the warranty on the car may lapse, but the replacement engine is brand new and should come with its own warranty. And surely for something like a car engine its something like 5 years.

Please let mw know if you have any knowledge in this area, and any links to specific regulations that the motor industry must adhere to in these cases.

Any repair under warranty doesn’t extend the warranty for that particular item, same as if you got a replacement tv or phone under warranty the warranty doesn’t start again.

unless you were out of warranty then I presume you might get some guarantee on the item replaced.

Yes the warranty only runs until the original warranty is over

If you contribute even €1 to the cost of the replacement I believe you’ll legally get a better warranty on the work

but to be fair, what’s in it for them covering it longer.

Look on the bright side OP, at least the engine went before the warranty expired and you're not left footing the cost.

As others have said, cars are the same as everything else, a warranty replacement doesn't extend the warranty.

Most parts only come with a year warranty anyway . I would be more worried about resale value if your mileage clocker goes back to 0

No. However it is flagged as a warning if you do a motorcheck (that is if you bother to update the new engine number in the vehicle details).

If the repair covered fully under warranty you have no entitlement to any additional warranty on the components replaced. If you contribute to the cost of the repair, then you have a warranty on that component
