VRT on car from NI

Hi Guys,

A lad I know bought a car from NI dealership in 2019, He got the V5 invoiced to him but never bothered VRT'ing the car. I was interested in buying the car from him. I was wondering if I was to planning to get the car VRT'D when I get ownership, will I have to pay the penalty on him not registering the car in the 20 day time frame?. Or since its been changed into my name and ownership with proof of purchase etc..., will I 30 days to pay this fee without any penalties.

Understanding compound interest can make you rich, the daily penalty seem small at 0.1%, Let's say that VRT owed is 10k, that's 0.1% every day for lets say the last 4years. (365x4). The total extra VRT you'll have to pay is 43028.14 + 10k.

I'd be looking at a different car.

So since he hasnt vrt'd the car and its registered to him, If I decide to buy it I'll get charged the VRT?.

Is he using it in the north or has the car just been parked up down where, you say it's registered to him, is he using a NI address.

No he has it parked down here with an ROI address.

The V5 must could still be registered to a UK address then. Has the car been SORN in the UK since he bought or marked as exported. Have you done a HPI check on it.

Your friend will have to give you a receipt for VRT

If the sellers address is Irish you will have to provide proof of when it came into the country or be charged fees.

If the sellers address is UK you don’t need any proof and won’t be charged any fees. (It can be any made up address)

Yes he bought it from a dealership, TopGearNI and got the V5 invoices to him and had it down in the ROI from then, The sellers address is irish and has been given the V5 invoice from that dealer. So if I buy it and it’s then changed ownership into my name I can then VRT it with no fees?

The V5 isn't in a southern address. If you buy it you'll be off your head, get him to VRT it then talk money with the lad.

Coming back on this I looked up the reg of the car on GOV.UK, It has a green box with a tick beside SORN and the export marker says "No".

So it's down as SORN, what's the address on the V5 it needs to be a NI address and preferably SORN pre January 2021.
