    Hello,

I would like to put a hand rail down the right hand side of a stairs but when i tap the wall its not solid brick but some type of board.

A friend says that there must be solid brick under that board.

Is it possible to say for sure there will be solid brick going down a stairwell wall?

The house is a mid terrace house. I've attached a pic of the actual stairs.

    Regards

That's probably a stud-wall. You would need to locate the studs (vertical timbers) and screw the hand-rail into these as only they can provide the support required to take the rail. You can hire/buy a device called a stud-finder to do this.
