This looks top tier, and Colin Farrell is great here, will be out next year.

Bit of a weird choice to include a clip with a big boom mic and camera crew in it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,173 ✭✭✭trashcan

Colin Farrell is literally unrecognisable there. Probably more so than any actor I can think of in a role.

    Now in production.

Literally the first line you see on screen.

    Think about it.

I know that....but it still takes you out of the trailer or "featurette" imo.

My big question will be how far into the batman world this might dip; cos you'd have to imagine certain characters are gonna get ring-fenced for potential movies, so won't/can't be touched. And if the show sticks with this more brooding realistic angle, we may forget characters like Killer Croc or Clayface appearing.

Same with the Bat in the Room, and incidents that might cause a viewer to reasonably wonder where batman was when this happened.

Any chance it would have a similar range of characters as Gotham. Even first few seasons of Gotham where the focus was on the mafia families would make a decent show.

    Cristin Milioti is Sofia Falcone

I believe this is another victim of the strike, with production closed down.

First trailer popped up for this; honestly you tell me this is set in the Batman universe, I'd not believe it bar knowing this was 'aul Oswald.

Clancy Brown is always worth watching.

I'm getting Tony Soprano vibes, wouldn't recognise Colin

Said it already but dead curious how this will thread the bat needle; might just decide to be a mob show set in the batman world and that's it.

Unlike some of the other more recent spin-offs from the Batman universe, this once actually looks interesting. I'm not really into most of the superhero stuff generally but this is one I might watch.

I was never a fan of the Tim Burton/DeVito take on the Penguin myself. This looks far better (admittedly solely based on the above teaser) if they keep that same realistic/gritty tone.

Previous comments apply: it all certainly looks slick if a little grim. Stil think this might struggle to find an audience / fanbase.

Its going to get a lot praise. it looks great, Max I assume has a big footprint in the US, it should get a lot of eyeballs

Hmm.. guess I should watch The Batman before this so..

I got around to watching The Batman last year.

Did we need ANOTHER Batman, especially after Nolan's? No.

Did it bring anything new? No. Not really

Was it interesting? Yeah. Lost it at the end but was interesting until then.

    However

Colin Farrell was simply amazing. I never really rated him highly before this (Unfairly). Thought he was good (Especially with The McDonaghs) but, y'know, not the greatest range in the world.

But he was simply astounding. No matter how good human makeup is, you can nearly always still tell who the person is underneath. Sure, you may need to be told initially but then you go "Oh yeah! That jaw or that voice/accent or those eyes" or whatever. Not so here. Even knowing, going in, he's unrecognisable. So much so that when they announced this series that I thought it would be an origin story. Showing from Colin Farrell aging to The Penguin.

I remember Kermode reviewing the Super-Mario Brothers… I mean, Gucci movie and he was going on about Leto looking for his next Oscar by doing makeup and Dolmeo ad accent. He then briefly says something like "At no stage did I look at Colin Farrell in The Batman and think "That's great" I didn't know he was in the movie!"

The movie is pretty good (Even if they leaned a bit heavy into greasy-goth young Bruce Wayne look). Paul Dano is that suitably creepy he does so well but Farrell is the standout for a well-earned reason. I am really looking forward to this

It will premiere Friday 20th of September on Sky Atlantic

    Really enjoyed that opening episode.

His Dublin accent slipped out a few times.

Good first episode, dark, moody, atmospheric and it rains alot in Gotham. Looks promising.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,173 ✭✭✭trashcan

Honestly didn’t think so. Just watched it tonight and thought it was very good. Cannot see any remnants of Colin Farrell there. Make up and performance are brilliant.

    didn't quite buy Alberto's turn

    Strong opening episode. Enjoyed it.

I enjoyed it for the most part, but did anyone else feel like there was a lot of CGI smudging or blurring going on with his face towards the start?

And the blurred backgrounds (extremely shallow depth of field) for a lot of the outdoor scenes had me thinking that they've continued to use the volume for a lot of these shots. Found it quite distracting.....

Farrell was fantastic though, really disappears into the character. Did he always walk with a penguin waddle in the movie? I only watched it again the other night and never noticed that.

    I wasn’t mad on it

A lot of the dialogue felt like typical ChatGPT cliche gangster shtick and found some of the acting substandard (Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone in particular)

Impressed with Farrell however, would never know it’s him. I like the dark atmosphere they’ve built too.

Will give it another go next week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,638 ✭✭✭Homelander

Thought it was quite good and Farrell is incredible, really can't see him in there at all.

Dark and grounded, didn't realise it was r-rated either until I was watching it, you would completely forget you were watching something set within the Batman universe.

Few criticisms - some weird looking CGI/green screen shots in particular, but overall very promising.

Wasn't it originally meant to be a hip problem that caused the gimp but in this it's some ingrown toe condition?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,551 ✭✭✭AllForIt

I thought the opening episode was very good, had my undivided attention from the start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 858 ✭✭✭Homesick Alien

I enjoyed it but the big issue for me is the believeability of taking Victor under his wing (aha!). The idea that this psycho would decide that this simpering young fella is the right man to do his dirty work stretches credulity beyond the comic book setting. Maybe it'll be an interesting character arc, but I'm doubtful.

The DEI hire with the stutter is starting to drag in the show 3 episodes in, the character is bringing nothing and the over emphasis on the stutter is starting to grate

Ok he pulled something out at the end, but still don't feel the character fits the story line

Sofia is really making the show interesting. I guess the mystery of whether she did the things she is accused of will be the driver of the show outside of the drug deal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 oopssjj

    Sofia is stealing the show

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,142 ✭✭✭✭expectationlost

    bonehead victor

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,738 ✭✭✭ollaetta

Wasn't sure after the first two but enjoyed episode 3 way more. The Victor storyline is still not very believable but Sofia is the star turn alright.

Damn, that was a really solid episode, my favourite yet.

Sofia is the best part of the show.

    Dunno. Sophia is boring me.

Okay you're nuts, great. That's all she has.

    More actual PENGUIN 🐧

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,563 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

I do like Sofia and the penguin so liked the episode. The mob characters seem terrible miscast though. None of the actors look like they ever be cast in any real mob movies. Didn't help Mark Strong already played a mob boss in kickass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,868 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Totally agreed - no Penguin (well tiny bit) but she commanded the whole episode

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,142 ✭✭✭✭expectationlost

Mark Strong as a younger John Turturro?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,142 ✭✭✭✭expectationlost

    Sophia isnt very smart

That was quite an ending kin hell …..how did she keep the last guy alive? or was it not planned

Interesting to see where it goes with Oz now at war on both sides
