Hi lads have leaky ball cock valve but can't remove lid as the pipe connected

How are you supposed to replace it if by removing the lid potentially breaks / twists this pipe? Thanks

That's probably an overflow pipe, is there another pipe running into the top of the tank on either of the sides?

Lift the lid slightly to confirm whether it is an overflow. You usually just lift it off and then slide the lid from under it.

Overflow pipe to outside, leaking one , is on the side and is plastic only pipe on lid is this one .surely it's crazy to have another over flow on the lid?. I've replace ball sockets in toilet cisterns before but cant figure out why someone would put pipe in lid that was meant to be removed. Btw it's attached to lid

The pipe going in the lid is the expansion pipe. It is supposed to go inside the lid like the one in the photo. If the thermostat on the imm failed then the water in the hot water cylinder would boil & Expand. The expansion pipe will vibrate or swing wildly from side to side with the pressure buildup. This is why it goes into the lid.

There should be enough give in the pipe and lid to wiggle the lid off to allow you to replace the ballcock. It's important to make sure that the expansion pipe is back in the lid when have finished the job

I've never known a plumber bother to take remove old pipe work if he didn't need to so probably it was an expansion pipe but is no longer in use.

Wake me up when it's all over.
