Ideally, we'd like to stay close to city centre - within 15-20 minutes radius walk.

Any hotel suggestions (B&B only, we'll dine out) or AirBnB?

Also, what's on your list of must-do in Hamburg?

    Thanks.

We spent 4 nights there in December 2021. Loved it but wouldn't feel the need to go back - but would definitely recommend it.

We stayed at Premier Inn as it was excellent value at the time (€55 per night), an U/S Bahn literally outside the door and walking distance to everything we wanted to see (that said, we love walking) - https://goo.gl/maps/BJmo1ZnMDvoFtAqy7

If going in the winter months, it's baltic cold and the wind coming off the river would strip paint - but we were prepared for it!

We did so much, but some pretty cool things worth a mention:

    Explore a U-Boat: https://goo.gl/maps/N3oF4sh6GiZewjQM6

Explore a retired merchant ship: https://goo.gl/maps/38DDZSZagX6Yw2CX7

    Another ship: https://goo.gl/maps/mhSZUtoTiZEquF9F6

    Walk under the river: https://goo.gl/maps/i9c4L9G9T5Q7bFsX7

You're seeing the trend that we like the water, but also, a night-time cruise along the canals / river is also a 'must do' - Commentary is mainly in German (we were there during COVID, so a lot of stuff wasn't running as normal) but the views were just spectacular! Bring your own beer or buy some on-board... serious craic (imho).

Visit the Elbphilharmonie - There's a viewing platform which you can walk around 360 degrees. This whole old 'warehouse' area is lovely to walk around, you can almost smell the history: https://goo.gl/maps/GGYyKQK39ZkQwxY39

Of course, the Reeperbahn area must be visited. Not what we're into but it's still good craic to wander down for a look and a few pints: https://goo.gl/maps/WYWKuKK1tswwK47Q8

If you have the time, a day trip to Lubeck is an absolute must.... seriously, don't skip this if you have the time. 1 hour each way on a train from Hamburg: https://goo.gl/maps/P8frZdCtmg8qjEAo9

It's a great place to visit, especially if you're into architecture. The Speicherstadt and Hafen City areas are great for a wander and you'll see some very interesting buildings. You can buy your tickets for the Elbphilharmonie online. The day and skip the queues. Place was mobbed the day we went there.

    Thanks all.#

We had a great time. Did a tour of the harbour. A few concerts. A walk around the lake is a must - about 2.5 hours - the lakeside houses and apartments are like nothing you've ever seen. Incredible. Hamburg, along with Bayern, is the California of Germany. Very wealthy state. You can see why around the lake.

For dining, Cafe Gnosa is superb and superb value too.

Always thought the area round Lake Constance is the "California of Germany"

Only remember Hamburg for my military training ;o))
