Painting an old aluminium porch

I have an old 80s/90s aluminium porch that I'd like to paint to match the color of the house. It's a very smooth brown finish and I'd like to paint it grey. I'm thinking of giving it a sand and trying to apply a metal paint suitable for outdoors. Different people have told me different things though - some recommend using spray to paint it and others say the metal paint should be fine but to use a primer first. Can anyone advise on the best approach for this style of porch?

Zinsser do a powerful range of primers for this job. If in Dublin, MRCB in Cornmarket have the range but good hardware stores would have them too. Have a look at this.

Get a few of these (1 will go a long way) for the sanding, will be less likely to scratch than sandpaper and will leave a good key for the primer. Available in Autofactors.
