Have Ryzen 3100 on b550 with Nvidia 1660I

could update the CPU to 5800x or similar (Ryzen 5000 series is the end of the line for b550)

Or do I start again and go up to 7000 series or even Intel?

The old clunker will likely be handed down to my eldest

Update. A 5800X or 5800x3d and you're fine for years, with whatever GPU.

A 3100 is a big bottleneck, a 1660Ti not so much at 1080p, can always reduce settings if needs be, but 3100 will choke on lots of newer games.

b550 is still a current MB that many people have.(obviously it's not the newest, but they are still decent) I myself have a X570 and only upgraded my old 3700X to a 5800X this week. Big difference between the two so a 5700X or a 5800X will be a massive step up from your old 3100.

I only read the last line of your original post now about giving the current system to you child. It's up to you if you want to upgrade and have the money to do so. The Ryzen 7000 MB's will have a few CPU upgrades available for a few years where as if you went with a Intel system you will have to buy a MB and CPU again each time you want to upgrade.
