It's owned by John Gaynor ex Gaynor McVeigh in Templeogue village. According to the CRO, the two associated companies are trading since 2007 and 2015 respectively. It's not a fly by night company. The Google reviews are about what you'd expect for a secondhand car dealer -I've seen worse and anything much better would make me suspicious.

The usual caveats apply - go in with your eyes open, run your own history check with Motorcheck or Cartell and get your own mechanic to check the car out.

READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE PURCHASING A CAR FROM CITYWEST CARS/JOHN GAYNOR LTD
John Gaynor Ltd (Citywest Cars) is a disgusting company and should be prosecuted for selling dangerous used cars. When I purchased the below car John Gaynor had full knowledge that 3 children under the age of 4 years old would be exclusively transported it the car daily.
I bought a 2015 Renault Grand Scenic Automatic for €11,000 from John Gaynor at Citywest Cars on 06/02/2024, trading in a 2012 Peugeot 5008 for €3,000, and paying €8,000 in cash.
The car broke down on the same day displaying “Engine Failure Hazard”. I contacted John Gaynor who point blank refused to have it towed to his mechanic. I paid €90 for towing to his mechanic in Rathcoole. I collected the car two days later and the mechanic informed me that he replaced a faulty fuel pressure regulator.
The same problem recurred on 20/02/2024. Again, John Gaynor refused to organize to have the car towed to his mechanic. I arranged to have the car brought to the mechanic on 22/02/2024. I was left without a car until 04/03/2024 when I was informed that it was ready for collection. The mechanic told me that he had replaced the entire fuel pump.
On 11/03/2024 the dashboard displayed a warning “Check Auto Gearbox”. The automatic gears were not changing correctly, and the car would not change up or down gear when needed. I again informed John Gaynor who advised me to bring it to his mechanic for repair, but again refused to organize to have it towed there. I brought it to his mechanic on 15/03/2024 and was left without the car until 08/04/2024. On collecting the car, the mechanic told me that the auto gearbox control switch box had been replaced.
At this point it had been 61 days since I bought the car and it had out of service for a total of 35 days with John Gaynor’s mechanic. John Gaynor assured me that all the problems had now been fixed and on 09/04/2024 he confirmed a further 3-month warranty on the car in writing.
Approximately 1 month later the same gear changing problems occurred and the same “Check Auto Gearbox” message appeared on the dashboard. At this point I demanded an immediate €11,000 refund for returning the car to him. He refused to engage in any meaningful way.
On 24/07/2024 I paid €462 to Assess Ireland, Ireland’s leading Automotive & Engineering Inspection Services company, to have the car technically assessed. It confirms a major problem with the automatic gearbox and that the car is not safe to drive. It concludes: “It is obvious that the gearbox problems pre-dated your purchase and were known to the seller”.
It also concludes: “Having examined the vehicle, I have formed the opinion that there was a known problem with the gear-selection process within the gearbox. This problem is causing the engine to over-rev itself and is causing the gearbox to not select the correct gear for the given engine-revolution. This is quite a dangerous fault and is causing the engine to stop and the car is left stranded on the roadway. With the current fault manifesting itself in the gearbox and causing the engine to come under undue stress, I do believe that this vehicle is not safe to drive (especially with children accommodated at the rear seats).

John Gaynor Ltd has been sent a Letter of Demand from my solicitor pursuant to the Sale of Goods and Supply of Ser

vices Act stating that the vehicle is not in a roadworthy condition and is not fit for the purpose intended and demanding a full refund of the purchase price to me. As of now he has not responded or engaged.
