Googling and am still confused about what it is and if it's such a good thing how come cars do not come with it from the factory?

Is it like a re-spray and what are the downsides of doing it and is it permanent or once done do you need to reapply again at some point?

There are lots of different products that call themselves ceramic coat. Ideally it's a clear protective layer that is long lasting. Prices vary a lot from 50 euro to 1000 euro

It's best to ask dealer to not wash brand new car and not apply any coatings. Then take it to a specialist before washing. This might help protect the paint for 6 months - 2 years, but you need to apply additional products over it such as washing, polishing and waxing. In theory the paint is protected under these layers and car can be restored later to new like finish.

It's often a mark up for dealers and they get the quickest cheapest crowd they can.

It depends how close to perfection you want, best for show cars or very low mileage cars.

I wouldn't leave a dealer put a ceramic coating on a car, they just don't have the training to do it properly, bring it to a proper professional car detailer who does it for a living. Also your car will need paint correction prior to getting a ceramic coating too otherwise it will just show up every imperfection on the paintwork even with a brand new car. Again a professional car detailer will advise you.

Audi and VW always push their life-shine products. It's a complete waste of money and their way of talking you out of getting back your deposit. Unless you are buying a supercar, I wouldn't bother. I have a VW with life shine and it's already got light scratches down the side from ditches on country roads.
