VRT Help

Hello. I have a deposit left on a 2016 car in NI. It was originally a mainland UK car, imported to the north and registered in April 2019 (pre-Brexit). However, the car is on a private reg at the moment and is from a private seller. The history checks out and the seller has applied for a new V5 to come for the original registration number.

I should be liable for VRT + NOX only. Will I have any difficulty with this when I arrive to VRT appointment as it is a private sale? First time importing. Have tried to read through other discussions to avoid duplicating but couldn’t see anything that assisted my query due to private registration. Thank you in advance

I had pretty much the exact same scenario and because the date on the V5 is new they needed me to get them poof that the car was in NI pre Brexit. They wanted old MOTs or something like that. I wasn't in touch with the last owner (as I bought from a dealer) but I got onto the DVLA in NI and they gave me a history of MOTs which showed it was tested in Enniskillen in 2020 which was enough for the VRT people.

In your case, if you're actually talking to the current owner, they might have a 2020 MOT that was done somewhere in NI that will do you.

Thank you very much @BnB for your reply. Did you have to wait for the new V5c to be able to receive the historic certificates and locations? Do you have a contact number for the DVA in NI or did you write an email for faster response. I need to make contact with the seller tomorrow and see if he has any copies of past certificates first but I would anticipate I’ll need to contact the DVA also

    Sorry for the late reply

Waiting for the V5 didn't really apply to me as it already had the new V5 before I even looked at it.

RE contacting the dva, I sent the email below to this address (that I found on the Internet) dva.customerservices@infrastructure-ni.gov.uk

They actually replied to me with the details I needed in 3 minutes so it must be a fairly standard query for them

    Hi

    I hope you are well.

I am looking to get a history of all MOTs carried out in Northern Ireland on a 2016 Landrover Discovery that I recently purchased.

The current Reg of the vehicle is XXX YYYYY (although this has changed recently).

The full VIN of the Vehicle is VINXXXXXXXXXXXX.

If it makes it any easier, I don't really need the full MOT results etc. I only really need to find the dates that the MOTs were carried out on and confirmation that the MOTs took place in Northern Ireland.

    Sincerely

I didn't know that this was the case. I understood that ALL cars originally from the UK that were in ni were due VAT.

I recently turned down a car in the same situation as yourself. Private plate in ni with the car being a 2016 UK car imported before brexit.

Can u link where to find this info please?

P.s. You didn't buy a red audi a4 quattro did you?

Yeah, it doesn't matter if it was first registered in the UK as long as it was brought into NI before Brexit (1st Jan 2021) and it stayed there. I bought a 2016 Disco. It was first registered in the UK when new but was imported to NI in 2018. I could show that it was MOTed in Enniskillen in 2020 and that was good enough for Revenue to prove that it had been in NI pre-brexit

The chap in the VRT office told me that lads seemed to be able to get ownership dates on V5s backdated somehow (to try and pull a fast one and make it look like the car had been in NI pre Brexit) so that's why they changed their policy to look like further proof of old MOTs, tax discs etc.
