Generating your own electricity

Hi I've seen lot of stories recently of people and business receiving insane electricity bills and it got me thinking about generating our own electricity. Going off grid so to speak. How would someone go about this and is it possible, say for a typical 4 bed roomed house?

Solid fuel covers a lot of bases but probably more expensive
Heating Hot Water and Cooking
Dunno what's happening with solid fuel long term and electric is convenient for everything else
