    Thanks for organising @Sad Professor

Also just to stress that, unlike previous years, there won't be two/three 'waves' of nomination threads - all the categories are up now, so please nominate away freely :)

A Monday morning reminder that the film awards nomination threads are up for the next week or so, so please do nominate if you have a few minutes :)

My two cents is I think there should be 1 best film category. It's too hard to do 4 different types of films X 4!

I'm actually the opposite. I've seen several horror/thriller films this year which I'm thinking don't belong in any of the categories.

    • The Watcher
    • Smile
    • Knock On the Cabin
    • X
    • Speak No Evil (Maybe foreign language)
    • The Menu
    • Black Phone
    • Hellraiser

and some animation and documentaries like

    • The Bob Burgers Movie
    • Navalny
    • George Carlin's American Dream
    • Moonage Daydream

And that's just off the top of my head.

It's a tricky one getting the balance right. I think what we wanted to try this year was pruning back the categories a bit as there was a concern the number of categories in the past was somewhat overwhelming and putting people off nominating. Equally, though, we've always wanted to ensure there's a broader range of films represented because based on past awards having a single 'best film' category will inevitably just see one popular hit dominate just through the sheer number of people who've seen it.

Definitely agree there are ambiguities though, especially as we've dropped past categories like documentary and animation (again just to see if having fewer categories makes a difference to participation). Any suggestions for changes or clarification are very much welcome. I think the 'Hollywood blockbuster' category is always a particularly tricky one to name, as yes I think it's envisioned that would include a lot of studio-backed, wide-release genre films like The Menu, Black Phone, Smile, Knock on the Cabin etc... even though they're lower-budgeted affairs. Whereas 'X' I think would fit more snugly in 'indie'. But then you run into the problem that many - quite rightly! - wouldn't be too familiar with what studio released what, and even 'X' was released by Universal here in Ireland!

I think of the two main categories (Hollywood and Indie/Arthouse) as attempting to draw a distinction between popular/mainstream films and artistic/prestige films. I would say most genre films fit comfortably into the former, but yeah there are grey areas and films that could potentially fit under both definitions or neither. It's not perfect but I do think it's a distinction worth making.

    Voted!

As always with these things, when I scan back through letterboxd I have moments of "...oh, that was from 2022??"

Some surprises I had forgotten such as: Michael Bay's best movie post Transformers with Ambulance; a new Henry Sellick movie came out nobody watched; a new George Miller movie came out nobody watched; and Athena was hitting a Best Of 2022 level ... til it absolutely shat the bed in the final scene; and Alex Garland needs to take a career break after Men.

Why is nobody nominating The Menu! Hands down for me the film of the year, even with my Irish tinted glasses on!

I'm surprised Cailín Ciúin hasn't been just nominated for all the awards 😂

I think it kinda came and went, in a field that had a few "rich people are ássholes" movies in 2022 already.

The top prize is the respect and / or judgement of your online peers. Probably judgement, honestly, but there’s always the prospect of respect. I think.
