I see the topic has come up a few times over past years, but rules are updated all the time.

I'm travelling to an event later in the summer and obviously not the only one with the idea - so there are no more spaces available on the flights for bikes. I've received advise, which i see repeated in a thread here from 2016, to book other sports equipment - surfboard for example, and once the bike is boxed and under the weight of 23kg, that it will make no difference.

Anyone with experiences of that, especially recent experience?

I used to travel with my Bike for races. It was in a "oversized" suite case hard shell case.

Don't up it in as a bike if you have a case just book in as oversized and pay the few extra euro's

You could try and book exact same flight on BA website. BA allow you a luggage allowance if you book the correct fare and don't seem to care if it is oversize or not.

so you travelled with an hardcase bike box? or a general nondescript hard shell case?

I've brought my bike without explicitly booking as a bike.

I just used the hardcase box and made sure that I booked enough bags to cover the weight
