Importing from UK - new rules

I have a bike that I owned when I lived in UK and kept at my brothers, its been in my name for 10 years and VRT would only be €120 if I brought it back here. However, I've been told under the new rules I'd have to pay duty & vat which are likely to be more than its worth. It was first registered in 2005 so is nearly 18 years old. I know that there are different rules for NI but this is a UK bike so it will have to comply. I've looked online and rules are quite confusing, plus it was a private sale and I don't have a receipt. How do I calculate the other costs apart from VRT, which is straight forward?

You employ a Customs agent who does all that for you, as part of the clearance process.

That is another change after Brexit.

Its not worth it unless you have a rare machine.

generally true, but if the total bill of customs, vat & vrt is still a few hundred, you're unlikely to buy a bike for the same money here. I know it feels like you're paying for the same bike twice, but if it's a good one, might still be worth doing.

If OP told us what it is, we could put a better figure on it.

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

The Citizens' Information website is a bit more informative than the Revenue one.
