Advice for Sole Trader

My son gave up his part time job in December as he is a musician and gigging most weekends. He has also started to do a little work for a relative who is paying him when he submits an invoice. He does not want to work for anyone and wants to remain working this way for now so I have advised him to set up as a sole trader. He has a gap of 9-10 weeks so is it possible to backdate the Sole trading status so he doesnt have a break in employment for credits. Is he better to pay tax through out the year either weekly or monthly or wait until the end of the year? Is there anything else he needs to do?
